INTRODUCTION

A computer is a multipurpose electronic device that can receive, process and store data. They
are used as tools in every part of society together with the Internet. Computers nowadays are
complex; there are a lot of different components inside them, and they all serve different
purposes. They all need to work together for the computer to work; knowing how a computer
works makes it easier to use a computer by being able to understand how a computer will
respond. Computer is derived from a Latin word computare which means to to calculate,
to count, to sum up or to think together. So, more precisely the word computer means a
"device that performs computation".
HISTORY OF COMPUTER

The computer as we know it today had its beginning with a 19th century English mathematics
professor name Charles Babbage.

He designed the Analytical Engine and it was this design that the basic framework of the
computers of today are based on.

Generally speaking, computers can be classified into three generations. Each generation lasted
for a certain period of

time, and each gave us either a new and improved computer or an improvement to the existing
computer.

First generation: 1937 1946 - In 1937 the first electronic digital computer was built by Dr.
John V. Atanasoff and Clifford Berry. It was called the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC). In
1943 an electronic computer name the Colossus was built for the military. Other developments
continued until in 1946 the first general purpose digital computer, the Electronic Numerical
Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) was built. It is said that this computer weighed 30 tons, and
had 18,000 vacuum tubes which was used for processing. When this computer was turned on
for the first time lights dim in sections of Philadelphia. Computers of this generation could only
perform single task, and they had no operating system.

Second generation: 1947 1962 - This generation of computers used transistors instead of
vacuum tubes which were more reliable. In 1951 the first computer for commercial use was
introduced to the public; the Universal Automatic Computer (UNIVAC 1). In 1953 the
International Business Machine (IBM) 650 and 700 series computers made their mark in the
computer world. During this generation of computers over 100 computer programming
languages were developed, computers had memory and operating systems. Storage media such
as tape and disk were in use also were printers for output.
Third generation: 1963 - present - The invention of integrated circuit brought us the third
generation of computers. With this invention computers became smaller, more powerful more
reliable and they are able to run many different programs at the same time. In1980 Microsoft
Disk Operating System (MS-Dos) was born and in 1981 IBM introduced the personal computer
(PC) for home and office use. Three years later Apple gave us the Macintosh computer with its
icon driven interface and the 90s gave us Windows operating system.

As a result of the various improvements to the development of the computer we have seen the
computer being used in all areas of life. It is a very useful tool that will continue to experience
new development as time passes.
ADVANTAGE OF COMPUTERS

Computers makes it possible to receive, supply and process large volumes of data at
very high speed.
Computer reduces the cost of all data related operations including, input, output,
storage, processing, and transmission.
Computer greatly improves the speed of data input, output, processing, and
transmission.
Computer ensures consistent and error free processing of data. However it should
be noted the error free processing is subject to correct feeding of data and correct
programming.
Digitization of all kinds of information including sounds and images, combined
with massive information processing capabilities of the computer has resulted in
development of application to produce physical products of very high quality at
great speed and very economically. We are all aware of the improvement in audio
and video systems including computer games using modern computer technology.
However computers are also playing a big role in manufacturing of many other
physical products. For example, a computerized insta-paint system, scans the colour
of any surface and produces a paint of exactly matching colour and shade.
The data input, output, and processing speed of computers has enabled development
of many applications requiring speedy continuous monitoring of a process or
situation and responding to it very quickly in real time. For example, a small
microcomputer in a car may continuously monitor the speed. load and other
condition of the car and accordingly control the fuel and air mixture to maximize
the fuel efficiency. In an entirely different kind of application, a computer may
control the movement of a missile launched to intercept a another missile fired by
the enemy.

DISADVANTAGES OF COMPUTERS

Computer is highly dependent on the quality of input data fed to it. Though computers
are very fast in tasks that are pre-programmed, it lake the ability of human brain to
detect and correct errors that it is not specifically programmed to do.
The task of programming a computer for a computer application is very costly and
time consuming. This reduces the utility of computers for applications that are non-
repetitive.
Computer systems are rather rigid. Once a computers system is designed and
programmed, making even minor corrections or improvements can be quite costly and
time consuming. For this reason a great care is required in design and development of
computer systems.
Computers require use of sophisticated equipment and support facilities. For example,
a person solving a problem of maths using just a pen and paper can carry these with
him or her anywhere with ease. However if the same problem is to be solved using a
computer, the person will not only need access to a suitable computer, it will also be
necessary to have the required software and suitable electric power to run the
computer.

IMPORTANCE OF COMPUTERS

Let us find out the significance of computers in our daily life:

1. Education Computers have a great contribution in the education field. The internet
enabled computers do not only provide important knowledge and information on every
subject, but they also connect students across the world. Moreover, the concept of
smart classes, ebooks, multimedia learning, etc., has become possible only because of
computers.

2. Internet With the help of internet on computers we stay connected with our friends
and family. Computers provide us information and also entertain us. Today, we just
need to type a word in the search engine and numerous pages open up for providing
information on that particular word! Computers are extremely helpful in the
distribution of information and knowledge. Also, we can watch movies, videos, news,
etc., on computers with internet. Computers also help us generate money as there are
many jobs and businesses that can be done online. Moreover, the online banking
systems, online shopping and similar internet supported concepts on computers help
save our time as well as money.

3. Calculation: While computers carry out calculations and store and process data at
office, they are also useful at home for many domestic tasks. For instance, they help us
calculate the household budget by storing every day/monthly essential data.

4. Help Businesses to grow Regardless of being small or big, various businesses

maintain their books of accounts in computers. Also, there are various online methods
like email campaign, social media marketing, etc., that help businesses to promote and
grow. Computers also provide quick & reliable electronic receipts in supermarkets and
at various other places too. They are also widely used at hospitals for storing and
retrieving patient information.

5. Entertainment Computers are great sources for entertainment. They give us plethora
of choices when it comes to entertainment. We get to listen to music, watch movies and
videos and chat with our friends with the help of computers.

CONCLUSION

Compensation management is all about the remuneration received by the employee for
rendering his/her services to the organization. It includes both financial and non-financial
aspects. Compensation helps in motivating the employees thus enhancing organizational
excellence and effectiveness.

Compensation must motivate the employees to contribute their best and it must be fixed as
per their needs and aspirations and should be based on their merit. There is need for
innovative tools and techniques and strategies in compensation management that customize
the individual needs of the employees for ensuring better productivity and performance at the
workplace
