With the financial support from Integrity Action (UK), KUSOED Integrity Alliance held a
two day workshop in November.
KUSOED Integrity Alliance made a public call in early November for expression of
interest to participate in a two day writers workshop and received well over 20
applications with a sample writing or draft article. The participants were mostly from
education background (those studying Master, MPhil or PhD at KUSOED), with one
participant from School of Management and three participants from Health Science
(Purbanchal University) background. The objective of the workshop was to build
capacities of researchers in Nepal for publishing in academic journals. The workshop
was held on 26-27 November 2016 with active participation of all 25 participants (See
Annex II) (including Integrity Champions members of the Alliance) at the Seminar
Hall of KUSOED, Hattiban, Lalitpur.
The workshop was facilitated by two writing experts from KUSOED, namely Dr. Laxman
Gnawali (Associate Professor of English), and Mr. Rebat Kumar Dhakal (Chair of
KUSOED Integrity Alliance). The workshop had two modules: Writing a Publishable
Paper (Day I) and Publication Process (Day II) (See Annex I for Program schedule).
The workshop started with welcome remarks from Integrity Advocate Mr. Tika Ram
Pokhrel. He introduced the participants on the purpose of the workshop and the
overview so far on the integrity programmes carried out by KUSOED Integrity Alliance.
Dr. Gnawali delivered a session on basics of academic writing and provided the
participants with technical and practical tips on the format and stylistics of academic
papers. Mr. Dhakal took the overall lead to conduct the workshop. He specifically dealt
with the journal editorial and publication process, with specific reference to Journal of
Education and Research (JER) a biannual publication of Kathmandu University School
Mr. Dhakal also introduced a mentoring scheme for the participants (participants were
required to write and submit their first draft within a month, and are now receiving two
types of mentoring support through academic mentor and writing mentor), and also
encouraged peer learning mentioning so that participants can learn many lessons from
one another. Likewise, The Dean of KUSOED and also the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of
Education and Research shared his experiences of Editorial Management. Participants
applauded the initiatives that KUSOED Integrity Alliance has taken and remarked
positively about the writing workshop and expressed their commitment towards
finalizing the article with the mentoring support from KUSOED Integrity Alliance. In the
closing session, Mr. Tika Ram Pokhrel, advocate of KUSOED Integrity Alliance reflected
on the workshop results in the light of the academic integrity programmes.
