Tropical storm intensifies Probe military partisan in polls
THE Philippine Athmospheric, Geo-
physical and Astronomical Services
Administration (Pagasa) said “Do-
meng” has merged with a low pres-
sure area (LPA) east of Batanes and
has intensified into a tropical storm.
Tropical Storm “Domeng” now
carries maximum sustained winds
of 65 kilometers per hour (kph)
near the center and gustiness of up
to 80 kph. It is estimated based on
satellite and surface data 430 kilo-
meters east of Basco, Batanes.
In an afternoon bulletin re-
leased by Pagasa, “Domeng” is mov-
ing west at a speed of 19 kph and
forecast at 40 kms. east of Basco,
Batanes in the afternoon today and
400 kms. west of Basco, Batanes by

One of the issues they brought
up was Gutierrez’s alleged failure
to act on the P728-million fertilizer
fund scam.
The group said the Ombuds-
man should also be held liable for
her alleged refusal to prosecute
then police Director Eliseo de la
Paz for his alleged illegal act of
not declaring before Customs offi-
cials the more than US$ 10,000 he
brought out of the country despite
his public admission under oath
that he committed the illegal act.
The complainants further
claimed that Gutierrez also failed
to take action on the poll automa-

MALACANANG issued yesterday
a directive to revoke all the alleged
midnight appointments of former
President Gloria Macapacal-Ar-
royo.
Presidential Chief Legal Coun-
sel Eduardo de Mesa said Execu-
tive Order No. 2 was issued and
they are now trying to determine
the exact number of those “mid-
night appointments” made by the
previous government.
He said there were 977 appoint-
ments made before March 10 but
noted that they would have to re-
view it first.
“I'm not saying that those 977
can be considered midnight ap-
pointments. Some of those ap-
pointments could be valid, we have
to review them one by one,” De
Mesa said.

The executive order also said
midnight appointments cover ap-
pointments and promotions made
45 days before the May 10 elec-
tions in violation of Section 261 of
the Omnibus Election Code.

agents were placed on a “floating
status.”

ranking officials of the bureau,
came from the Background In-
telligence Division (BID), Field
Operations Division (FOD), In-
telligence Special Operations
Division (ISOD), Anti Kidnap-

Division (AKHARD), Special Ac-
tion Unit, and the Special Task
Force.
The functions of the abolished
offices were already transferred to
certain divisions, but it does not
mean that the abolished person-

Siargao surfing fest kicks off in Sept.

A GRAND surfing festival,
dubbed as 1st Siargao Island
Surfing Festival, will be held
in one setting for local, na-
tional and international from
September 21 to October 1.
Surigao del Norte Gov-
ernor Sol Matugas said that
among the surfing sporting
event that will be held at the
annual festival are the Na-
tional Surfing Competitions
and 16th International Surf-
ing Cup and other foreign
surfing competitions held at
the country’s surfing capital,
Cloud 9 in General Luna,
Siargao Island.
Series of activities are
lined-up for the two-week
yearly festival like various
sports events, cultural and
talent shows and tourism/
trade fairs, Surigao del Norte
provincial tourism officer
Ivonnie Dumadag said.
Among the special guests
who signified their intention
to attend the first surfing
festival were Vice President
Jejomar Binay, Department
of Tourism Secretary Alber-
to Lim, and Cebu Governor
Gwendolyn Garcia, Dumad-

val will have a grand launch

Kris Alas leads Letran Knights in thrashing St. Benilde at NCAA

KRIS ALAS stepped up in the ab-
sence of his younger brother Kev-
in as he lifted Letran to a 70-54
thrashing of St. Benilde yesterday
and back into the thick of things
in the 86th NCAA basketball tour-
nament at The Arena in San Juan
City.
The defense-minded Alas
showed the other facet of his game
as he poured in his season-high 15
points he spiked with another per-
sonal best 13 rebounds to power
the Knights to their second win
against four losses.
“I have to give credit where
credit is due and he really played
well,” said Letran coach Louie Alas
referring to the eldest of his son.
Younger Kevin Alas, the offense-
minded between the two brothers,
sat out his second straight game
due to a contusion to his left knee
he sustained in a tough game
against San Beda two weeks back.
