3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION

Main Hazards: Food additive product

Signs + specific risks: In the presence of water, the product makes a slippery
surface .

Recommendation: Contact with eyes, skin or inhalation can be irritant for

sensitive persons due to the product hydrophile
properties.

4. FIRST AID

Skin Contact: Wash well with soap and water.

Eye contact: The dry powder may cause irritation, although

solutions are non-irritating. Rinse with plenty of clean
water.

Ingestion: No risk if small quantity ingested.

Inhalation: Inhale fresh air. If large amounts are inhaled, keep

airway open and seek medical advice.

5. FIRE

Treat as Class A fire

Fire fighting measure: Water Foam Powder CO2

Explosion hazards: Can burn in presence of flame and continues

when flame disappears. The smoke
characteristics can be compared to an organic
product.

6. SPILLAGES Collect by vacuum or brushing. Avoid the use

of water if possible. Dispose of by any locally
approved method for the disposal of non-
hazardous domestic waste.

7. HANDLING & STORAGE

Handling: To be handled in an open and well ventilated

area in order to avoid dust formation. Avoid
humid atmospheres.

Storage: Store in a clean place in sealed containers.

Away from heat sources and strong odours and
possible contaminants. Store cool and dry.

8. PRECAUTIONS

Respiratory Protection: If dust levels cause discomfort, a suitable

respirator should be used. Exposure to any
dust should be minimised.

Hand Protection: Gloves may be beneficial.

Eye Protection: The use of suitable eye protection is

recommended if high dust concentrations are
present.

Appearance: Fine powder.

Colour: White to light yellow / brown
Odour: Very slight characteristic.
Melting Point: Decomposition from 1200C
Boiling Point: Decomposition before ebullition
Ignition Temperature: Auto ignition temperature is >2000C.
Solubility: Soluble in water forming viscous solutions,
becoming a paste at concentrations c.a.> 5%

10. STABILITY + REACTIVITY

Stability: Stable in normal conditions

Conditions to avoid: Usual protection in order to avoid dust

explosions (concentration <0,1g/l)

Hazardous Decomposition: The product does not spontaneously

decompose. The products of thermal
decomposition may include carbon dioxide and
carbon monoxide.

Non Toxic: Food additive product.

Skin Contact: May be irritant to sensitive persons.

Eye Irritation: May be irritant to sensitive persons.

Dust: Treat as nuisance dust with normal dust control

measures.

Toxicity (fish): No data available (avoid getting into natural

environment)

Bio-degradability: Xanthan Gum is biodegradable. It is not

believed to be a danger to the environment.

13. DESPOSAL

Destruction of product: To be recycled if possible. Destruction in

specialised centres in accordance by local
regulations.

Treatment of empty containers: Eliminate in specialised centres in accordance

Sea: Xanthan Gum is not considered dangerous in

any transportation cod4e.
Air: Avoid humidity.
