GENDER OF -MUT COMPOUNDS

Whilst the rule that the final noun in a list of compound nouns determines the gender of the noun (e.g.
das Schrottauto (der Schrott + das Auto = das)) is almost always true, with der Mut things are a bit more
complicated. Compounds ending -mut can either be masculine OR feminine.

There are only around 30 nouns ending like this, so you could learn them all if you wish. However, if you
are ever in doubt, guess der as only 9 can ever be die!

Here are all -mut compounds with their corresponding gender. Any other words not ending on this list,
but that also end with -mut, are most likely not compounds but base words themselves.
