ABAQUS Contact Manager - Overview

Create and review the following contacts

Contact Pair
General Contact (only explicit)
Tie
Pretension Section
Shell2Solid coupling
Methods to create new contacts
Method 1: Auto contact - Finder: Automatically finds the interfering parts
Method 2: create surfaces and interface during building contact pair
Method 3: build the contact using surfaces and interfaces predefined
in Surface or Surface interaction tab

ABAQUS Contact Manager Contact Pair

Method 1
Helps you define the *CONTACT PAIR and
*TIE keywords and also the*SURFACE cards.
Based on a proximity distance.
The interactions and surfaces are placed into
a temporary Auto Contact Browser, where you
can review and adjust the pairs

ABAQUS Contact Manager Contact Pair

Method 2
Create a new contact
If needed: create new surfaces
Assign surface(s) as master or slave
Define a new surface interaction or choose
an existing one

ABAQUS Contact Manager Contact Pair

Method 3
Create and review surfaces from Surfaces tab first
Define a new interaction
Finally combine surfaces and interaction to a

ABAQUS Contact Manager *SURFACE

Define surface by *ELSET id and face identifier

*ELSET, ELSET=MTubeContSet
1, 2, 3
*SURFACE, NAME = Ma_Moving, TYPE = ELEMENT
MTubeContSet, SNEG
Select ELSET and specify identifier. Use Element set option in Define tab
HM writes ELSET name and identifier to INP file
If None selected for Face, no identifier written to INP file. ABAQUS will use all
faces for all elements in the ELSET.

ABAQUS Contact Manager *SURFACE

Define surface by *ELEMENT id and face identifier

*SURFACE, NAME = new_surface, TYPE = ELEMENT
2204, SPOS
2203, SPOS
Element face identifiers
Solids - S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6
Shells and gaskets - SPOS, SNEG Excluding the Element set option, use any option in
the Define tab
Adjust normals (shells) and optional parameters

Composites - Workflow

1. Create/import your FE model

2. Assign orientation to properties within composites panel
3. Import/Create/Realize plies
4. Create interface- and sublamintes if necessary
5. Realize laminates/interface laminates
Review plies and laminates
6. Export zone based model

Exporting into Solver Specific Zone models

Altair solvers Optistruct / Radioss supports Ply based models

Abaqus and other solvers support Zone Based models
The following step Laminate Realize shall convert Ply based model to
Zone base model
This will create *SHELLSECTION_COMPOSITE cards for Abaqus.

Systems collector

Systems are organized in systems

collectors
Create systems collectors from panel or
model browser
Create one system per system collector
System Collectors do not require a card

Types of System assignments

Reference systems:
Used to define the entities. For example, nodes created or assigned to a
reference system are defined with respect to their reference system.
This option is used to define nodes by accepting coordinates relative to a specified
local rectangular coordinate system and generating the nodal coordinates in the
global coordinate system.
*SYSTEM followed by nodes defined will appear in the input file
Analysis/Displacement systems:
This option is used to specify a local coordinate system for displacement and
rotation degrees of freedom at a node.
*TRANSFORM followed by *NSET will appear in the input file

Page 24

*SYSTEM and *TRANSFORM systems

Create systems from systems panel

*SYSTEM - defines node coordinates in a local coordinate system
Select the nodes and use set reference
*SYSTEM followed by nodes defined will appear in the input file

*TRANSFORM defines the directions for the degrees of freedom of nodes

Select the nodes and use set displacement
*TRANSFORM followed by *NSET will appear in the input file

Page 25

*ORIENTATION system

*ORIENTATION defines a local system for elements

*ORIENTATION, NAME=, DEFINITION=, SYSTEM=
Xa Ya Za Xb Yb Zc
locdir alpha
Creation process:
1. create systems collector with no card image
2. create HM system from systems panel
3. card edit HM system (systs) and activate ORIENTATION option
Associate *ORIENTATION to section property:
1. card edit property collector
2. specify systems collector name in ORIENTATION field
