Philippineswasestablished.

ThePhilippinesbecameanindependentcountryin1946,andinthe1950s,thePhilippinesmen'snational
basketballteamdidwellininternationaltournaments.ThePhilippineteamwonthegoldmedalattheAsianGames
in1951,thefirsttimebasketballwasplayed.[1]ThePhilippinebasketballteamdominatedtheAsianGamesuntil
1962.[1]Inthe1954FIBAWorldChampionshipthePhilippinesplacedthird,winningthebronzemedal,thebest

IntheAsianGames,afterCarlosLoyzaga'sretirement,thePhilippines'dominancedeclinedbutthecountry
continuedtoplaycompetitivelyintheAsian,andWorldChampionships.WhileintheOlympicGames,the

The1970sand1980switnessedthebirthoftwonewleagues:thePhilippineBasketballAssociation(PBA),
foundedinApril1975,andthePhilippineAmateurBasketballLeague(PABL)in1983bothleaguesreplacedthe
34yearoldMICAA.

ThePBAiscomposedof12companybrandedfranchisedteams.Itisthefirstandoldestprofessionalbasketball
leagueinAsiaandthesecondoldestintheworldaftertheNBA.[2]Theleague'sregulationsareahybridofrules
fromFIBAandtheNBA.TheleaguewasfoundedinQuezonCityonApril9,1975.[3]Itsindividualteamoffices
aredirectedoutofPBAheadofficeslocatedinEastwoodCityinQuezonCity.

In1978,thePhilippineshostedtheFIBAWorldChampionshipandfinished8thinthetournament,despitelosing
allitsgames.TheeventwasthefirstWorldBasketballChampionshipevertobeheldinAsia.

Inthe1980s,NorthernConsolidatedCement,ateamcomposedofthecountry'snationalbasketballtrainingpool,
wontheFIBAAsiaClubChampionship(1984),andearnedtherighttoplayintheWorldCupforChampionClubs
(1985)(1)inGirona,Catalonia,Spain.ThePhilippinesgotthe7thplacefinished,thecrowdlovesthemassmall
butterrible.TheteamalsocapturedtheWilliamJonesCupchampionship.

In1986,thePhilippineswonitsfifthFIBAAsiaChampionshipandearnedtherighttoplayinthe1986FIBA
WorldChampionshipheldatMadrid,Spain.Theteamfailedtoplayintheworldchampionshipsduetopolitical
crisis,andtheeventualcomingofthePhilippines'PeoplePowerRevolution.Laterin1986,thePhilippines
capturedthebronzemedalintheAsianGamesafteracontroversialsemifinallosstoSouthKorea.

In1990's,thePhilippinessentallprofessionalnationalteamsintheAsianGamesbasketballtournaments.The
PBAwasgiventhetasktoreclaimbasketballsupremacyinAsiabutwaslimitedbythenationalassociation,the
BasketballAssociationofthePhilippines(BAP),toplayjustintheAsianGames.

Thefirstallprofessionalnationalteamwasformedin1990,coachedbyRobertJaworski,andtheteamproduceda
numberofPBAsuperstarssuchasAlvinPatrimonio,Avelino"Samboy"Lim,and1990PBAMostValuablePlayer
AllanCaidic.Theteamfinishedsecond,andcapturedthesilvermedalafterlosingtoChinainthefinals.Allan
CaidicandSamboyLimwerenamedintheAsianGamesbasketballallstarmythicalfiveselection.

In1994,SanMiguelBeermen,whichcapturedthePBAAllFilipinoCuptitle,earnedtherighttorepresentthe
PhilippinesintheAsianGames.TheteamalsoincludedloanedPBAplayers,andamateurstandouts.ThePBASan
