2. Structural Design Assumptions and Standards

2.1 General
Detail engineering design is basically focused in structural design of individual components.
All civil structures are designed to withstand worst possible loading condition ensuring that
the structures are fully safe. Structural design also ensures normal working condition for
deformities of members with respect to the appearance, durability or performance of the
structure.

2.2 Loads
All structures are designed considering the most unfavorable combination of following loads.

2.2.1 Dead Loads

The following unit weights are adapted for different materials.

S.No Materials Unit Weight (t/m)

1 Stone masonry in cement mortar 2.0
2 Reinforced concrete 2.5
3 Mass concrete 2.4
4 Water 1.0
5 Steel 7.85
6 Soil or earth 1.8

2.2.2 Live Loads

Anticipated live loads depending upon the functional requirements of individual structural
element or member are considered. Appropriate reduction in the live loads is made in the
extreme loading condition.

2.2.3 Site Specific Loads

Site specific loads are considered depending upon the type of structures.

2.2.4 Earthquake Load

All the structures are designed to withstand lateral forces acting on the structures due to
earth movement. The seismic load is calculated on the basis of IS: 1893-2002. Here, the
design horizontal earthquake coefficient value is estimated as 0.135.

2.2.5 Loads Due To Water

Hydrostatic, hydrodynamic and uplift pressure caused by water on the body of the
structures is considered as per requirement.

2.2.6 Loads Due To Earth or Soil

The active and passive earth pressure is computed using following relations.
Units Engineering Consultancy Pvt. Ltd Structural Design Report

1Sin 1Sin
Active earth pressure coefficient: K a= K a=
1+ Sin 1+ Sin

Earth pressure coefficient at the rest: K o=1Sin

1+ Sin
Passive earth pressure coefficient: K p=
1Sin

Where,
= Angle of friction

2.2.7 Thermal Load

To account the thermal load, minimum reinforcement are provided in every structure to
prevent the cracking due to temperature fluctuation.

2.3 Safety Factor

For the normal condition the factor of safety adapted is 1.5 and for seismic loading condition
the factor of safety is slightly reduced as per general norms. The following Factors of safety
values have been adapted to structure against overturning and sliding caused by excessive
seepage.

2.4 Structural Design

2.4.1 Codes and Standards

All reinforced concrete structures are designed as per IS: 456-2000: Code of Practice for
Plain and Reinforcement Concrete.

2.4.2 Design/ Strength Parameters

2.4.2.1 Concrete
For structural design, minimum grade of concrete is taken as M25 for water retaining
structures. For mass (lean) concrete, M15 grade concrete is used.

2.4.2.2 Steel
Structural steel conforming to IS: 1786, with yield strength = 415 N/mm and 500 N/ mm
are adapted for RCC structures.

2.4.2.3 Minimum Cover to Concrete

Minimum cover to concrete for water retaining structures and other structures is adapted to
be 50 mm and 40 mm respectively.
Units Engineering Consultancy Pvt. Ltd Structural Design Report

2.4.2.4 Minimum Distance between Two Reinforcing Bars

Sub Clause 26.3.2 of IS: 456-2000 specifies the following for minimum spacing of bars. The
horizontal distance between two parallel main reinforcing bars shall usually be not less than
the greatest of the followings:

The diameter of the bar if the diameters are equal;

The diameter of the larger bar if the diameters are unequal;
5 mm more than the nominal maximum size of coarse aggregate.

2.4.2.5 Minimum Diameter of Reinforcement Bars

In water retaining structures, the minimum diameter of reinforcement bar is adapted as 12
mm and in some sections where the applied forces are very less compared to section
capacity diameter of bar of 10 mm is adapted.

2.4.2.6 Maximum Width of Cracks

Crack width for all water retaining structures is limited to 0.2 mm

2.5 Design Philosophy

Limit state method is applied for design of all RCC structures.

2.6 Design Tools

The structural analysis and design of the structures have been carried out using computer
software SAP 2000 v14.0.0 and different customized excel program.

4.1.2 Design Loads and Their Combinations

4.1.2.1 Design Load Types

The different loads cases considered for structural analysis are Dead load, Uniform Live
Load, Water Load and Water Pressure, Earth Load, Earth Pressure and Earthquake load etc.
The design load case numbering may vary for the different structures considered. The
different load types are defined as below:

S.N Load Type Load

o

1. Load Type 1 Dead Load (DL)

2. Load Type 2 External Soil load (HPe)

3. Load Type 3 External Water Load (FPe)

4. Load Type 4 Internal Water Load (FPi)

5. Load Type 5 Live Load (Surcharge Pressure) (LL)

Units Engineering Consultancy Pvt. Ltd Structural Design Report

6. Load Type 6 Earthquake Load (Seismic Load)

(EQ)

4.1.2.2 Seismic Consideration

As the selected structures are symmetrical and heights do not exceed 40m, Seismic
coefficient method as described in IS 1893:2002 is used. Hence horizontal seismic
coefficient is calculated as:

ZISa
A h=
g2R

Where,
Ah = Design horizontal seismic coefficient
Z = Seismic zoning factor = 0.36
I = Importance factor = 1.5
Sa/g = Structural performance factor = 2.5
R = Response reduction factor = 5
So Ah is estimated as 0.135.

4.1.2.3 Load Combinations

The reinforced concrete design is based on the "Limit State Design" method hence the
load combinations for the analysis and design are also governed by this method of design.
The different load combinations used for running the software may vary for different
elements. The load cases have been grouped into load combinations considering the critical
situations the structure may be subjected to. The following load combinations are for the
analysis:

1.5 DL + 1.5 LL + 1.5 FPe + 1.5 HPe
