headline the 2017 Jackson
County Fair.
Trent Harmon, the winner
of the 15th and final season
of Foxs first-run American
Local audiences are sure to marvel at the impressive antics of the stars of the All American Lumberjack Show
when they drop in on the Jackson County Fair July 27.

July 27, from 6:30 to 8:30
p.m.
This years fair to
have artistic flair

The 149th annual Jack-
son County Fair will have
an artistic flair, thanks to
a $3,144 grant from the
Southwest Minnesota Arts
Council.
The money will help
support a pair of artsy
additions to this years
great Jackson County get-
together.
Area native Kipp Davis,
a recent graduate of Iowa
Lakes Community College,
will do a live mural sign
painting during the fair
itself to promote the up-
coming 150th anniversary
of the fair in 2018. Davis
will be painting July 27 in
the fairgrounds central
grassy area.
Additionally, Acoustic
Smoke, a band known for
its use of a unique blend
of rock, blues and folk to
relay songs with rich story-
telling, will play at the free
stage in the fair village on
July 26. Performances will
be at 3, 5 and 7 p.m. The
fair association is working
with the Jackson Center
for the Arts to promote the
event.
The Jackson County Fair
Association was among 21
organizations from across
southwestern Minnesota
that recently received a
share of close to $84,500
Idol television series, will
perform a headline grand-
stand concert the Saturday
evening of the fair. Show
time is 8 p.m. on July 29.

There will be 10 events
during the All American
Lumberjack Show, said
Bargfrede, secretary of
the Jackson County Fair
Association. They will do
boom racing, there will be
hot-saw races, log rolling,
axe throwing, X-cut sawing,
spring-board tree topping,
an obstacle pole event and
chainsaw carving.
Not only that, but the
All American Lumberjack
Show will also include a
kids lumberjack sport
camp following the show

Gordon eager to bring his
brand of country to town

An up-and-coming coun-
try music band will headline
the Jackson County Fairs
big Thursday night.
With a few original songs
getting some radio play time
as of late and a long list of
popular cover tunes, Mitch
Gordon of Mitch Gordon and
the Unleaded Band is eager
to show those familiar with
his music and those new to
his sound exactly what hes
made of. He takes the beer
American Idol winner Trent Harmon will headline the
2017 Jackson County Fair.

happen.
I was at the Jackson
County Fair last summer
for the dirt-track races
with my boyfriend, Engel
said. I worked last year
at the Minnesota State
Fair in the species office.
I had heard the Jackson
County Fair is very com-
petitive and wanted to
work with the kids at the
county fair this year.
Engel, a graduate of
Chisago Lakes High
School, is a junior at the
University of Minnesota
in the Twin Cities. She is
majoring in ag commu-
nications and marketing.
Her minors are art and
animal science.
I was involved in 4-H
garden stage at 8 p.m. on
July 27.

finding Gordon. Her niece
had heard him play in Iowa
and recommended him, so
she looked into the bands
availability. She said was
intrigued when she saw one
member of the band was
previously with the band
Maiden Dixie, which has
played at the local fair more
than once.

that I competed against
my own family and my
boyfriends family the

Engel started out in 4-H
showing rabbits, tried
horses, goats and had
some cattle, but found
she liked showing sheep
the most.
I grew up in sheep,
Engel said. I loved my
sheep projects.
It was Engels late mom,
Linda, who encouraged
her to take full advantage
of all the opportunities
4-H has to offer.
My mom loved sheep,
she said. She was a city
girl, but always support-
ive of me. When I start-
ed with sheep, my aunt
helped me at her place;
but Mom said I could
bring them home, so we
made pens for them and I
raised them there.
Engel has her own
sheep now and leases her
lambs to the younger kids
to work with and show at
the fair.
Engel said she is excited
to be part of the Jackson
County 4-H program and
the Jackson County Fair.
I grew up in 4-H, she
said. I am excited about
working at the Jackson
County Fair. I know it is
long hours, but I love the
county fair. I am looking
forward to giving back to
the younger kids.

Idol, Harmon has released
a self-titled extended-play
album featuring the top-30
country music hit, Theres
a Girl.
Withers said Harmon,
who will be bringing his
band to Jackson with him,
is sure to put on a show that
will appeal to all manner of
fair-goers.
I like his sound and
style, and I think a lot of
people from young to
old will have a great time
at his show, Withers said.
General-admission tick-
ets to the show are avail-
able through the fairs new
website, Bargfrede said,
and also available the eve-
ning of the show.

for the Loon Lake Cemetery
Restoration/Preservation
plans a special display at this
years Jackson County Fair.
Four bulletin boards filled
with photos relating to the
cemetery past and present
will be available for viewing
in the fairgrounds senior
building throughout fair
week. Mary Chonko, author
of a book about the Loon
Lake Cemetery, said the pho-
tos are of gravestones that
are or used to be at the cem-
etery, some of the people laid
to rest at the site and even
the recent cleanup effort.
In April, the Jackson
County Historical Society
Board of Directors approved
naming the Society for the
Loon Lake Cemetery Res-
toration/Preservation as a
subcommittee of the JCHS.
The goal of the group is to
not only advocate for the
restoration and preserva-
tion of the pioneer cemetery
situated on the banks of
Loon Lake, but also to work
toward that end.
