 From the Publisher When we learned about the big
changes coming this summer to
U.S. Highway 1 in Tequesta, we
knew we had to learn more. This
major change eliminating two
of the six lanes will result in
slower traffic along almost two
miles from the county line south
to the bridge.
Slower traffic: Is this really what
we need? I learned the impor-
tance of driving the speed limit
through Tequesta back in 1994.
My wife was pregnant at the time
with my first daughter when we
were pulled over for speeding.
I remember telling the officer a
small untruth that we were rush-
ing to the doctors office, since
my wife was not feeling well.
The nice officer let us off with A
warning. Since then Ive been an
obedient driver in this area,
at least.
Not everyone had to learn this
way, but then again not everyone
needs to. This road is a major thoroughfare and the best alternative to Interstate 95, which is
seven miles west. To take a perfectly good road and funnel traffic to just a few lanes seems
like a bad idea.
Read Suzanne Wentleys article on the project on page 20. She spoke with the Tequesta
Mayor Abby Brennan to get the towns view on the project as well as hearing from some of
the locals. It will be interesting to see if the town can win residents, including me, over with
the new project.
In this issue, we also asked our neighbors to tell us of a mentor from when they were
younger. I enjoyed the emotional responses on page 9.
It got me thinking of my mentor: Mr. Roger Shapiro. He was the one responsible for inspiring
me to apply to college. He was my sophomore year homeroom teacher, and he caught me
skipping class the month before my graduation. He asked me, What are your plans for after
graduation? It made me do some deep thinking. My response to him was utterly lackluster,
and I knew I had to do better. He stayed persistent with me and helped guide me through the
application process. Im grateful for his interest in my future. I mean, look at where I am today
lying to police and speeding down U.S. Highway 1! Dont worry, Mr. Shapiro, Ill do better.

mong boaters, the Jupiter Inlet is one of the most infamous inlets in Florida.
Some boaters, in fact, would rather run the 12 miles north to the St. Lucie
Inlet, rather than risk going in or out of Jupiter some days.
It is a well-earned reputation. Each year, the inlets unruly temperament causes
flips, wrecks and even deaths. The most recent fatalities were in November when
two men flipped a 21-foot center console while heading east out of the inlet at
daybreak. Both men died.
It happens every time there is a swell. Every time you get conditions that are
in the four- to six-foot range and up, youll see boaters really close to disaster,
said Brian Bowen, a Palm Beach County lifeguard lieutenant, who has worked
the beaches on and off since 1987. We have front row seats and pretty strong
binoculars, so we keep an eye on them as far as what they are doing. Its pretty
wild what you see out there.
Bowen has been around long enough to see how the inlet and surrounding waters
have changed. Right now, he said, navigation is trickier than when the channel
headed straight east.
One of the unintended byproducts of the south jetty being lengthened several
years ago was the creation of a line of sandbars that run parallel to the beach
about 300 to 400 yards offshore. This bar or impact zone, as local emergency
personnel term it sits anywhere from four to six feet deep and can raise all kinds
of trouble, local captains said.
Mark Stoe is the captain of the Mystic Rose charter boat, which docks behind
the Square Grouper and takes groups offshore to fish. The former lobster boat
draws six feet and is one of the many boats that has to pick its way (and days)
to get out.
Bowen and Stoe both agree the safest way to negotiate the inlet is to break the
mouth and head south (never north), staying between the bar offshore and the
beach. At that point, it becomes a waiting game.

You have to look at the sets of waves as they break on the bar if youre going
to make a run, Stoe said. There are times where I have sat there for 10 or 15
minutes, just waiting for the right opportunity. As recent as three weeks ago, I sat
there for about 12 minutes, looking for the right time to get through. You just put
your nose into it, wait and, when you see that lull in the waves, you just need the
power to get through it.
The penalty for not planning right or messing up the timing is the stuff of legend.
Capt. Jay York, owner of the Mystic Rose, stood on the dock and pointed at boats
ranging from his own to a 65-foot sportfish at the end of the dock to the 74-foot
Blue Heron charter boat, noting past injuries. He talked about well-known captain
Tom Henry, who died in 2010 when his 48-foot sportfish caught a wave wrong and
turned sideways in the inlet.
We got our windshields blown out one day by a swell, York said. You have to pay
close attention to wind direction and the size of the swells. Then, when youre in the
swells, dont go over the top of one or youre going straight to the bottom of the trough
and nothing good happens there.
York and Stoe have the Magic Seaweed app installed on their phones and are
constantly checking conditions. The magic number for staying in is three-and-a-
half foot swells and winds anywhere from the northwest, around the compass to
east.
The worst is when there is no wind, but a groundswell because it looks nice and
calm, but you get out there and all of sudden there can be eight- and 12-foot
swells, York said. But a family just looking to have a nice day on the water
doesnt realize that.
The biggest key for the Jupiter Inlet, or anywhere on the water, is to have respect
for the elements: Realize you are out of yours.
If I didnt have fear in this inlet lets just say my fear keeps me safe, York
said. If youre fearless it will eat you.
