IMPORTANT STATEMENTS

Standard Undergraduate Assessment Regulations

Your studies will be governed by version 5 of the Standard Undergraduate Assessment

Regulations (SUAR 5).

Under these regulations you are permitted two attempts at assessment for each module:
a first sit and re-assessment attempt.

This means that you will be required to withdraw from the course if, following the
reassessment attempt, you have not passed.

Cheating and Plagiarism

Both cheating and plagiarism are totally unacceptable and the University maintains a
strict policy against them. It is YOUR responsibility to be aware of this policy and to act
accordingly. Please refer to the Academic Registry Guidance at
https://icity.bcu.ac.uk/Academic-Registry/Information-for-Students/Assessment/Avoiding-
Allegations-of-Cheating

The basic principles are:

Dont pass off anyone elses work as your own, including work from essay
banks. This is plagiarism and is viewed extremely seriously by the University.
Dont submit a piece of work in whole or in part that has already been submitted
for assessment elsewhere. This is called duplication and, like plagiarism, is
viewed extremely seriously by the University.
Always acknowledge all of the sources that you have used in your coursework
assignment or project.
If you are using the exact words of another person, always put them in quotation
marks.
Check that you know whether the coursework is to be produced individually or
whether you can work with others.
If you are doing group work, be sure about what you are supposed to do on your
own.
Never make up or falsify data to prove your point.
Never allow others to copy your work.
Never lend disks, memory sticks or copies of your coursework to any other
student in the University; this may lead you being accused of collusion.

By submitting coursework, either physically or electronically, you are confirming that it is

your own work (or, in the case of a group submission, that it is the result of joint work
undertaken by members of the group that you represent) and that you have read and
understand the Universitys guidance on plagiarism and cheating.

Students should be aware that, at the discretion of the module co-ordinator, coursework
may be submitted to an electronic detection system in order to help ascertain if any
plagiarised material is present.
Electronic Submission of Work

Students should also be aware that it is their responsibility to ensure that work submitted
in electronic format can be opened on a faculty computer and to check that any
electronic submissions have been successfully uploaded. If it cannot be opened it will
not be marked. Any required file formats will be specified in the assignment brief and
failure to comply with these submission requirements will result in work not being
marked.

Students must retain a copy of all electronic work they have submitted and resubmit if
requested.

Learning Outcomes to be Assessed:

1. Describe and quantify civil engineering works in accordance with CESMM

2. Interpret civil engineering drawings and specification information to compile a

pricing document for tender purposes on selected measured work sections in
an electronic format

3. Construct descriptions of work appropriate to the work sections being

measured, cost and represent in a priced Bill of Quantities

Assessment Details:

All drawings, sketches and information relating to this coursework can be found in the
Coursework folders on Moodle. This is the task:

Creating a priced bill of quantities under the CESSM4 Rules for the following;
1. Proposed cancer radiation treatment centre (PHASE 01) (ONLY the
Concrete and Piling elements)
2. Construction of Hasik-Shuwaymiyah Road in Oman (ONLY the
earthwork, road, pavings and pipe work for chainage 35+000 to 35+200).
Marks will be allocated as follows:
1. Take off list, Query Sheet, Dim sheets and accuracy of quantities
(50 marks)
2. Costing information, rebasing calculations, final BOQ (30 marks)
3. Drawing submission (10 marks)
4. Presentation (10 marks)
Generally

Assume, you are working in an international Quantity Surveying Consultants firm

(named QSE) which has its branches in Sri Lanka, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and
Dubai. QSE serves for both local and international construction projects.

Local Projects
QSE provides Quantity Surveying services, Project Management services and
services on contractual and legal matters related to construction works to the local
projects.

International Projects
QSE limits its services to preparation of BOQ for the international projects.

Task - 01
You have been assigned to a local project: Proposed cancer radiation treatment
centre (phase 01) by your organization. The type of foundation is pile foundation.
Your client needs to know the cost for the foundation. For this purpose, you have
been issued some foundation drawings (4 Drawings: S02, S04, S05 & S06)
Take off has to be taken as per CESMM4 for piling and piling ancillaries, concrete
and concrete ancillaries and to be priced.
The project is a multi storey building which has been competitively tendered using
the FIDIC Form of Contract with an overall construction period of 120 weeks. The
start on site will be start on August 2017 and completion is due to be in August
2019.
Location of the building:
For Sri Lankan Students : Kandy
For Qatar Students : Al Rayyan
For Oman Students : Muscat
For Bahrain Students : Manama
For Dubai Students : Jebel Ali
The BOQ has to be priced in the local currency of the selected location.
Task 02
Meanwhile, your organisation receives a re-measurement work for an Oman project,
Construction of Hasik-Shuwaymiyah Road. The consultant of the project,
Renardet S.A. & Partners Consulting Engineers Llc has requested QSE to retake
measurement and preparing a BOQ. Your senior quantity surveyor assigns you to
prepare the BOQ for the chainage 35+000 to 35+200. In order to do this task, you
have been issued cross-section drawings of chainage 35+000 to 35+200 (11
Drawings given from HSRP/CS/2010/35+000 to HSRP/CS/2010/35+200) and Pipe
layout & Manhole Detail (2 Drawings: HSRP/FWPL/2010/35+000-200 and
HSRP/FWMD/2010).
Take off has to be taken as per CESMM4 for Earthworks, Roads and Pavings and
Pipework. (No need to price)
Take off and price in CESSM4 bill format the following
a) Piling and piling ancillaries, concrete and concrete ancillaries to the multi
storied centre.
Take off in CESSM4 bill format the following
b) Earthwork, road, pavings and pipe work for chainage 35+000 to 35+200 of
Hasik-Shuwaymiyah Road.

Submission
Your final bill of quantities must be supported by Measurement sheets (alternatively
print out of electronic measurement sheet with sufficient annotations and side casts,
approach statement, coloured up and marked drawings, pricing information and
calculations). The BOQ MUST be uploaded as an excel document.
Prices and rates can be obtained from a range of sources eg websites, suppliers, price
books or past BOQ prices can be used and do necessary adjustments to arrive for the
current date. Please provide a source for your rates, and where you have used multiple
sources identify the different sources. If no current addition is available then prices
must be indexed and adjusted to the current date. A sum of money or rate without a
source will not be accepted.
Marks will be allocated to each section for approach statement, dimensions
presentation, dimensions accuracy, waste calculations, correct bill format, correct
descriptions, pricing and sourcing of items as noted above.
You are strongly advised to firstly note and secondly comply with the assessment
marking scheme given.
