Trigonometric Functions Assignment

1) Example of an equation giving the value of the Cosine function for an angle measure in
its domain:
1
cos(60) =
2
The equation in the form of an inverse function:
1
arcos ( ) = 60
2
Another example:
The equation is:
cos(90) = 0
The equation in the form of an inverse function:
arcos(0) = 90

2) Example of an equation of a trigonometric function with a phase shift of -45:

3) to find the average temperature and the maximum and minimum predicted over the
year:
- The minimum temperature occurs when sin (6t) = -1 (the sine will be minimum when
it equals -1).
= 50 + 25 (1) =
- The maximum temperature occurs when sin (6t) = 1 (the sine will be minimum when
it equals 1).
= 50 + 25 (1) =
- The average of the two extremes is the average of maximum and minimum
temperatures.

4) To explain how to predict the behavior of tides:
We predict the behavior of tides using the trigonometric functions; as the tides
consists of high tides followed by low tides and this pattern repeats itself periodically
and this helps to model the behavior of tides as a trigonometric function of time such
as the graph in page 842, and thus we can determine the time at which the water level
will be high and what height will be to warn the neighboring communities.
To explain why certain tidal characteristics follow the patterns seen in the graph of
the sine function:
Semidiurnal tides consists of high tides followed by low tides such as the behavior of
sin function which is characterized by half positive period followed by half negative
period where the positive half represents the high tide and the negative half
represents the low tide.
