type),asyoumighthaveotheralgaeororganismsinthewaterthatcouldcompete
oreatspirulina.OneofthemostfrequentalgaeonecanfindisChlorellaor
Navicula.Thesealgaecancauseproblemsmainlyatthestartoftheculture,when
spirulinaarenotdenseenoughtostoplightpenetrationdeeperinthetank.

Oncethespirulinacultureisdenseandthriving,thereareverylittlerisksof
contamination,mainlyduetothegrowingconditions,veryspecifictospirulina.If
theculturehasapHover9.6andaSecchilowerthan3,theriskareminimum.(I
wouldnotrecommendharvestingifyoudonotmeetthesebasicconditions,more
onthathere).

IvebeentryingtomixtheingredientsoftheZarroucksmedium
togetherbutassoonasimixtheNAHCO3(sodiumbicarbonate)
withtheNaNO3(Sodiumnitrate)inthewater,itdoesntdissolve
anymore.Thereisathickwhitecarpetonthefloorofmytankand
itlookslikeasnowglobe.Ithasbeenlikethisforaweeknow.
Evenwhenistiritmanually,thecarpetwillformafterafewminutes
again.Ikeepthewatertemperatureat30degreesCentigrade.

theyareusedto,thecultureseemsto
lookworseeveryday.Thecellslump
togetherandthecolorofthemediumis
turningmoreandmoretowardsyellow
everyday.

Luckilymymainculturestilllooksnice
andbluebutIfearthatIkeptitwithout
propernutritiontoolongandtheywillnot
getbackintheirexponentialphase.Is

flakeybutlooksbetterthanbefore.TheproduceroftheNaNO3
toldmethattheyhavenotsoldanyforthepast10yearssincethe

solutionthatprecipitates.Haveyoutrytoincorporatethesolution
ataslowerrate,i.e.,leavemoretimeforthemediumtoadjust?
Ifthatdoesntsolvetheproblemtheprecipitateshouldbe
eliminatedwhenyourinsetheharvest.

Itpartlysolvedtheproblem.Thefirstfewdaysthere
wasnoprecipitationbutafterthatabitofitreturned.It
sinkstothebottomsoIdontthinkitsabigproblem
butitisstillabitstrangetome.

However,nowIhaveanotherproblem.Myculturewill
notgrowanymore.Afterharvesing80%ofmyculture
forapresentation,Irefilledthetankwithnewmedium
Therefore,itisnotdense.Thetemperature,pHand
lightintensityareok,buttheopticaldensityhasnot
changedinthelastthreeweeks.Coulditbethatmy

medium.Theproblemisthaticannotfindanywherehowtomake
thepostharvestmixoftheZarroukmedium.Whatimeanisfor
eachgrofharvesteddriedspirulinahowmuchgroftheZarrouk
mediumshouldiadd?ShouldiaddallthenutrientsoftheZarruk
mediumorsomeofthem?Letmesaythatiaminterestedfora
longtermculturesincethetankconsistsof30tonsofwater.

Ibeganusingthegrowthmediumlastweek,andmyalgaehad
turnedabrownish,lightgreencolor.Also,underthemicroscope
thealgaehasbecomeverysmall,stillgreenbutsmall.Iamworried
thatIhavebeenoverfeedingit.Iwashopingyoucouldtellmehow
