Scoring Rubric for Open-Ended Questions

DIRECTIONS: The following rubric will be used to evaluate your answer to open-
ended questions. You will be allowed to look at this while you are writing your
answer.
Score 4
Excellent
The response is an excellent answer to the question.
The answer is correct, complete, and appropriate.
o It contains relevant examples to illustrate the point.
o There is no evidence of misconceptions regarding the science content.
o The scientific vocabulary used is appropriate, accurate and complete
o Relevant, labeled diagrams are used as support
o Complete sentences are used.
There is evidence of higher-order thinking.
o The students answer relates the topic to prior knowledge.

Score 3 _____
Proficient
The response is a proficient answer to the question.
The answer is generally correct, complete, and appropriate.
o Minor inaccuracies in content may appear.
o Examples are used to illustrate the point.
o The scientific vocabulary used is appropriate & accurate, but may be incomplete.
o Diagrams are included that may not be relevant or labeled
o Complete sentences are used.
There may be limited evidence of higher-order thinking
o The students answer contains little relevant prior knowledge.
There may be significant evidence of higher order thinking but other flaws may be more than
minor.
o The students answer includes relevant prior knowledge.
o Inaccurate or inappropriate information may be included.
o Important science content is omitted.

Score 2 ____Marginal
The response is a marginal answer to the question.
While it may contain some elements of a proficient response, it is inaccurate, incomplete and/or
inappropriate.
o The answer does not provide examples to illustrate the point.
o There may be evidence of significant misconceptions with the science content.
o Some relevant scientific vocabulary is used, but other vocabulary could have been
included.
o Diagrams may or may not be included
o Complete sentences are used or some sentences are incomplete.
There is little if any evidence of elaboration, extension, higher order thinking.
o The answer does not include relevant prior knowledge.

Score 1
Unsatisfactory
The response, although on topic, is an unsatisfactory answer to the question.
It may fail to address the question, or it may address the question in a very limited way.
o There may be few examples included.
o There may be evidence of serious misconceptions regarding the science content.
o There may be little relevant scientific vocabulary used.
o Diagrams may be lacking or unrelated or incorrect
o Sentences may be incomplete.
There may be no evidence of elaboration, extension, higher order thinking or relevant prior
knowledge.
