Design a Timing Belt Drive (TBD) Learning points

Objective: Student learn how to fulfill the given specifications

by suitable mechanical design.
1. Able to size standard components.
2. Design parts to integrate with the selected standard
components.
3. Apply knowledge learnt in lecture to calculate necessary
parameters in timing belt drive system.
4. Able to produce proper mechanical engineering design
documents.
First part (TBD1) is a guide-through exercise. All students
work on the same specification.
Second part (TBD2) each student is given individual
specification to work on. Students have to reproduce the
similar documents in the same format as they learnt in the
first part.

Selection Procedure for Timing Belt Drive
Step 5
Calculate belt length & center distance
1. Using tentative center distance (C) and
Extract from course note
calculate tentative belt length:
Given C=C2C = 250 mm
L' = 2C'+1.57(D + d) +
(D d )

2. Choose the nearest standard
D : Large pulley pitch diameter (mm)
on the belt length. d : Small pulley pitch diameter (mm)
3. Calculate the exact center
