E-Folio Submission for Essential IX

American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essential IX of The Essentials of

Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (2008) is Baccalaureate Generalist

Nursing Practice. General nursing practice includes care of patients across their lifespan.

Exemplar

To illustrate Essential IX, I chose the Comprehensive Health Assessment I completed for

my Health Assessment class. Essential IX recognizes that the integration of knowledge and

skills is critical to practice (2008). As a baccalaureate graduate, I will need to be able to use the

knowledge and skills I have learned to provide nursing care to patients with complex health

issues. Additionally, it is important to consider cultural and social considerations and their impact

upon the patients physical condition.

Reflection

Objective 1 of Essential IX is to Conduct comprehensive and focused physical,

behavioral, psychological, spiritual, socioeconomic, and environmental assessments of heath and

illness parameters in patients, using developmentally and culturally appropriate approaches

(American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). Comprehensive and focused assessments

are an integral part nursing care. While each have their place, it is important to be know how to

conduct both. One of the assignments in my Health Assessment class was to perform a

comprehensive physical assessment and present the findings in written form. I conducted my

assessment on a 51-year-old male in relatively good health presenting for a well-check visit,

addressing each body system in depth.

Objective 8 of Essential IX is to Implement evidence-based nursing interventions as

appropriate for managing the acute and chronic care of patients and promoting health across the

lifespan (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). Nurses used their clinical

judgment and expertise to identify problems and plan goals and interventions that will improve

patient outcomes. Nursing diagnoses can reflect actual problems, at-risk concerns, or health

promotion strategies. Goals should be specific to the patient and measureable and a time frame

given within which to reevaluate the patient for progress. As part of the comprehensive health

assessment, I identified two nursing diagnoses, including patient goals and nursing interventions

for each.
