FlexRayisusedintheF30asthesystembusfornetworkingofthesystemsthatcontrolthedynam-
ichandlingcharacteristicsandenginecontrol.Aso-calledstarcouplerwithfourbusdriversislocated
inthecentralgatewaymodule(ZGM),whichisintegratedinthenewFrontElectronicModule(FEM).
ThebusdriversforwardthedataofthecontrolunitsviathecommunicationcontrollertotheZGM.The
FlexRaycontrolunitsareconnectedtothesebusdrivers.

Terminatingresistorsareusedonbothendsofthedatalinestoavoidreflectionsonthelines.

Thebodycontrollerareanetwork2(K-CAN2)facilitatescommunicationbetweencontrolunitswith
ahighdatatransferrate(500kBit/s).TheK-CAN2isalsoconnectedtotheotherbussystemsviathe
centralgatewaymodule(ZGM).

Thepowertraincontrollerareanetwork2(PT-CAN2)createsaredundancytothepowertraincontroller
areanetwork(PT-CAN)intheareaofengineandtransmissioncontrol.

TheF30hasEthernetaccessinordertobeabletoprogramthecompletevehiclequickly.Duetothe
veryhighdatatransferrateoftheEthernet(100MBit/s),theprogrammingaccessviatheMOSTsys-
temcouldbediscontinued.TheheadunitalsoobtainsanEthernetconnection,viawhichtheprogram-
mingforMOSTdevicesiseffected.

TheFEM/ZGMassumesthetaskintheF30ofdistributingthetelegramsinternallywithinthevehicle
tothebusesandofforwardingtotheheadunitviaK-CAN2.Theheadunitthenprovidesfordistribution
ontheMOST.

ThenavigationdataoftheCICHigh(NavigationProfessionaloption609)arestoredonitsharddisk.
ThesenavigationdataareupdatedviatheEthernetaccessattheOBDIIconnectionandtheinternal
vehicleEthernetconnectionbetweenZGMandCIC.

TheD-CANattheOBDIIconnectionisusedinthedealerorganizationtoprogramvehiclesat"autho-
rizedthirdparties".Legalprovisionsstipulatethatallcontrolunitsmustbeabletobeprogrammedvia
theD-CAN.HDDupdateisanexception.

Twoseparatepowerdistributionboxes-adaptedtotheFEM/REMconcept-areinstalled.Theengine
compartmentpowerdistributionboxislocatedontherightsideoftheenginecompartmentdirectly
onthefrontbulkhead.Thebatterypowerdistributionboxisnolongerlocatedatthebattery,butisse-
curedinfrontofthebatteryatthewheelarch.

AfewfunctionswhereloadrelaysareintegratedintheFEM/REMarefuse-protecteddirectlyinthe
FEMorREM.Thisalsoappliestotheterminal30FcontrolledexclusivelybytheFEM.

operation.

3.4.Energymanagement
TheenergymanagementoftheF30hasbeenextendedtoincludethefunctionsalreadyaddedinthe
F25.

3.4.1.Chargestateindicator
IftheF30isintransportmode,thebattery'sstateofchargeiscontinuouslydisplayedwheninopera-
tion.Thecarriercanthereforechargethebatteryontimeinordertopreventdeepdischargingofthe
battery,andthereforedamagetothebattery.Beforethevehicleishandedover,thedealercancheck
whetherthebatteryissufficientlychargedorwhetheritneedstobereplaced.

3.4.2.Influenceofsteeringpower
Thepowerconsumptionoftheelectronicpowersteering(electromechanicalpowersteering)EPSis
extremelyhigh.Inordertoavoidabriefreductioninthesteeringservoavailability,theenergymanage-
mentoftheF30anticipatesandrespondstosteering-intensivedrivingmanoeuvres(parkingorthree-
pointturns).Todothis,specificinputvariables(e.g.drivingspeed,brakepedaloperationandsteering
angle)areevaluated.Theenergymanagementcanimplementthefollowingmeasures:

Raisetheidlingspeedandadjusttheignitiontimingtoincreasetheenginetorque
Increasethevehiclevoltageviathealternator
Turnoffconveniencefunctions(heatedrearwindow,outsidemirrorheatingsystemandseat
heating).

3.4.3.Powerdistributionbox,front
Acondenserisinstalledinthefrontpowerdistributionboxtoreducetheharmoniccontentinthevehi-
clevoltagecausedbythealternator.

Ifafaultyelectricfanisreplaced,theharmoniccontentofthevoltagemustalsobemeasured.Ifthe
harmoniccontentistoohigh,thisindicatesthatacondenserisfaultyandmustbereplaced.

TheoptionalequipmentBMWAssistwithenhancedBluetoothandUSB(option6NL)andanactive
BMWConnectedDriveagreementarerequiredfortheBatteryGuardfunction.

TheBMWTeleServicesBatteryGuardCallisautomaticallyactivatedbythevehicleunderthefollowing
conditions:

Acounterexchangewithcontrolunitsfromothervehiclesisnotpossible.Acontrolunitcanonlybeor-
deredasasparepart.ItisimportanttobearinmindinthisrespectthattheFEMandtheDMEaresup-
pliedalreadycodedtothevehicle.Theadvantageofthisisthatonlythecontrolunitisreplacedand
thereisnoneedtoadjusttheelectronicimmobilizer.

KAcontrols,theforcedventilationoftheinteriortemperaturesensorintheF30couldbediscontinued.
