The real story

On the morning of the third day there was thunder and

lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a
very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp
trembled.
Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet
with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.
The real story

Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because

the LORD descended on it in fire.
The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a
furnace, and the whole mountain trembled violently. As
the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder,
Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him.
Exodus 19:16-19
The real story

When the people saw the thunder and lightning and

heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in
smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a
distance and said to Moses, Speak to us yourself
and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us
or we will die.
Exodus 20:18-21
The real story

Moses said to the people, Do not be afraid. God has

come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with
you to keep you from sinning.
The people remained at a distance, while Moses
approached the thick darkness where God was.
Exodus 20:18-21
Moses (and 70-some people) go up

Then the LORD said to Moses, Come up to the LORD,

you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the
elders of Israel.
[so they went up and ] saw the God of Israel.
Under his feet was something like a pavement made
of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky.
The bright blue pavement

Mentioned 4 times in scripture - Exodus 24, Ezekiel

Surrounding Gods throne

Moses went up,
Heaven came down
The Israelites were commanded
to celebrate this event every year,
7 weeks after Passover.
They called this post-Passover festival
Shavuot, or The Feast of Weeks

In greek, its the 50th day, or pentecost.

Passover celebrates how
Israel was called out of slavery
to become Gods people.
Shavuot (Pentecost) celebrates
how Israel became Gods people
by the covenant He made
with them at Mt. Sinai.
Fast forward 1200 years
Joel 2:28-29

I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.
29 Even on my servants, both men and women,

I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

Jeremiah 31:31-34

The days are coming, declares the LORD,

when I will make a new covenant
with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah.
32 It will not be like the covenant

I made with their ancestors

when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt []
Jeremiah 31:31-34
33 This is the covenant I will make with the people
of Israel
after that time, declares the LORD.
I will put my law in their minds
and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
Jeremiah 31:31-34
34 Nolonger will they teach their neighbor,
or say to one another, Know the LORD,
because they will all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest,
declares the LORD.
Ezekiel 36:26-27

I will give you a new heart and put a

new spirit in you; I will remove from
you your heart of stone
and give you a heart of flesh.
27 AndI will put my Spirit in you
and move you to follow my decrees
and be careful to keep my laws.
Old and New

I will move you to follow my decrees

Compare that with the old covenant
the fear of God will be with you to keep you from
sinning
Even Jesus spoke of this during his
ministry
John 4:21-24

Yet a time is coming and has now come when the

true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and
in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father
seeks.
24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the
Spirit and in truth.
Truth without spirit, spirit without truth
At Sinai, and on the day of Pentecost

7 weeks after the Passover sacrifice
