Analyzing English Language Test with SPSS

Abstract: T his paper demonst rates to the foreign language researchers and teachers how they, w ho
have had no syst ematic t raining in educat ional statistics, can analyze their classroom or schoo-l based test s
w it h SPSS. A st ep- by-st ep approach is taken, starting from variable def init ion, input ting data, analysis to
understanding t he result . Our focus is on t he int erpret ation of SP SS print out concerning item diff iculty and
it em discrim inat ion. Our aim is t o demyst if y quant itative item and test analysis for humanist ic- minded for-
eig n language teachers so as to make it possible f or them to make classroom test and schoo-l based test more
scient ific and bett er serve foreign language education. Ult imately, t he qualit y and ef ficiency of foreign lan-
guage t eaching in China w ill be improved.
