Flexible operator configurable split of IP traffic over hybrid

Iub
Hybrid Iub
Hybrid Iub refers to the support of a hybrid of ATM and IP transport types on the Iub
interface. A hybrid Iub configuration allows a part of the user traffic to be exchanged on
the Iub interface over an IP transport layer.
The standard hybrid Iub configuration, introduced in UA06, employs ATM for OAM,
Signaling (Control Plane and SRB), all CS, PS R99 and streaming traffic. IP is used only
for HSDPA and HSUPA User Plane (UPlane) interactive and background (I/B) traffic.
This support is continued in UA8.1.

Feature overview
Flexible operator configurable split Iub is an iBTS feature which allows support of
additional IP Iub traffic separation options apart from those available in the standard
hybrid Iub configuration.
These new configuration possibilities are referred to as either Evolved hybrid Iub or
Hybrid Iub Plus configurations. With this enhancement, IP in hybrid configurations can
carry OAM traffic and all PS UPlane traffic. Signaling (CPlane and SRB) and all CS
traffic remains on ATM.
In UA8.1, traffic may be separated into up to seven flows at the NodeB and five flows at
the RNC side according to a combination of the following three criteria:
Per traffic category (CPlane or UPlane or HSPA or R99)
Per quality of service (DSCP)
Per operator (in case of UTRAN sharing)
Note: Traffic can be separated at Layer 2 by use of different VLANs and at Layer 3
by use of different NodeB IP addresses. If traffic is separated at Layer 2, there is one
IP address and subnet associated with each VLAN.

Note: Each UPlane flow is monitored by a proprietary continuity check mechanism.

For more information, see Continuity check (p. 2-5).

Feature implementation at NodeB side

The following concepts are introduced to implement the split IP Iub feature in UA08.1
release:
Virtual Interface (VI)
Ethernet Bandwidth Pool (EBP)
Virtual Interface
A VI in NodeB is a logical entity that acts as convergent point for all traffic generated. A
VI identifies an IP flow resulting from a classification of the Iub ul traffic. A VI is linked
to an EBP.
A VI is a connectivity concept and corresponds to a traffic flow either at L2 (VLAN) or at
L3 (IP address). A VI is characterized by a VLAN Id, an IP Address, a subnet mask, and
the type of traffic that it is carrying.

Figure 2-2, Virtual Interface and Ethernet Bandwidth Pools (p. 2-4) illustrates the
connection between VIs and EBPs.

Figure 2-2 Virtual Interface and Ethernet Bandwidth Pools

Ethernet Bandwidth Pool

An EBP is a traffic management concept. An EBP is a traffic shaping entity for an IP link,
connected to a Physical Port. It is characterized by a CIR/PIR per Emission Priority
(maximum eight EPs) and an overall CIR/PIR for the EBP itself.
A set of one or multiple VIs can be linked together into an EBP to shape the aggregated
traffic flow.
Note: Up to seven VIs are supported on the NodeB, irrespective of MDA type, and
seven EBPs can be configured if the NodeB is equipped with a GE MDA.
A BTS equipped with a GE MDA is required to configure more than one EBP. BTSs
equipped with only 4pE1/T1 MDA can be configured with single EBP.

Feature implementation at RNC side

In UA8.1, the UPlane traffic may now be split into Bandwidth Pools (BPs) and IP flows
per priority and NodeB VI.
Bandwidth Pool

Issue 4 January 2013
Introduction to split IP traffic over hybrid Iub Flexible operator configurable split of IP traffic over hybrid
Iub
....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
A BP is a traffic management entity and can be configured, for example, to correspond to
the traffic of one operator in case of UTRAN sharing. There is a one-to-one
correspondence between an RNC BP and a NodeB EBP.
To support this behaviour, the following changes are made:
Enhanced Call Admission Control (CAC):
An option to choose either the IP flow with the most available bandwidth or the IP
flow being least used is added.
The CN Domain (PS or CS) is taken into account to map R99 PS calls, preferably
on IP.
Transport Map (Tm): An R99 PS RAB can be mapped on two BPs (ATM and IP or IP
and IP). However, IP is preferred for PS calls.
IP flow: An IP flow corresponds to a specific QoS of a traffic flow either at L2
(VLAN) or at L3 (IP address). RNC is configured with up to 16 IP flows per BP.
Note: For more details, see Native IP and Hybrid Iub in UA08 - Operational
Engineering Method, UMT/IRC/APP/035927.

Continuity check
An end-to-end continuity check is needed for each VI to ensure that the UPlane IP link
connectivity exists between RNC and iBTS.
Proprietary (UDP) heartbeat mechanism is used for the end-to-end continuity check in
evolved hybrid Iub scenario. This mechanism is used for each VI carrying UPlane traffic.
Continuity check initialization
In UA8.1, the NodeB ATTACH message is used for both hybrid and native IP Iub. The
message contains additional information communicating the VIs and IP addresses
configured on the BTS. In both standard hybrid and evolved hybrid Iub modes, ATTACH
messages are sent for each UPlane VI until the Heartbeat request is received in the
corresponding UPlane flow.
Note: ATTACH messages are sent with additional VI information even if split IP Iub
feature is not licensed or activated. So, the RNC no longer has to wait until the first IP
call to know the BTS IP address in standard hybrid Iub scenarios.
Loss of Continuity
When a loss of continuity is detected for a VI, all the IP flows mapped on the VI are taken
out of service.
The following actions are taken to bring the VI out of service:
RABs established on this VI are released.
New RAB is established on another available VI according to the TM configuration.
Proprietary (UDP) heartbeat alarm is raised.

Introduction to split IP traffic over hybrid Iub Flexible operator configurable split of IP traffic over hybrid
Iub
....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Configuration scope and restrictions
Flexible Operator Configurable Split IP Iub applies to Evolved split hybrid Iub with the
following scope and constraints:
Scope
OAM traffic may be either on IP or on ATM
PS UPlane may either be on IP or on ATM with preference on IP
Restrictions
CS User Plane must be on ATM
OAM traffic cannot be split across two different virtual interfaces (VIs)
Traffic can not be split across two different physical ports. Dual port split Iub
configurations are not supported.
Signaling must be on ATM: CPlane (NBAP message) and SRB (RRC message)
The maximum number of VLANs (VIs) is limited to seven.
The maximum number of UPlane VLANs (VIs) is limited to four.
The maximum number of EBPs is limited to seven.
Note: For evolved hybrid Iub configurations, up to five flows at the NodeB (one
OAM flow and up to four UPlane flows) and four flows at the RNC (up to four
UPlane flows, since OAM is not seen by the RNC) are allowed.

Configuration scenarios for split IP Iub support

Overview
In UA08.1, split IP over hybrid Iub is supported in the following configuration scenarios
only:
Scenario 1 - Hybrid # 3 (p. 4-3)
Scenario 2 - Hybrid # 6 (p. 4-4)
Note: For more details on the configuration scenarios, see Native IP and Hybrid Iub
in UA08 - Operational Engineering Method, UMT/IRC/APP/035927.

Scenario 1 - Hybrid # 3
In this scenario, the traffic is split in the following way at the NodeB side:
CS R99 conversational, streaming, and Control Plane (CPlane) traffic over ATM
HSxPA, PS R99, and OAM traffic over single IP Path
RNC: In this scenario, one BP is linked to the corresponding EBP at the NodeB side.
NodeB: In this scenario, only one VI must be created containing both Uplane and OAM
traffic and linked to one EBP.
To configure split IP Iub for this scenario, perform the following tasks in order:
1. (Optional) Adding or configuring Transport Map (p. 4-5)
2. (Optional) Adding or configuring Congestion Management objects (p. 4-8)
3. Steps to set the feature activation flag (p. 4-12)
4. Steps to add additional UPlane streams (p. 4-15)
5. Steps to configure the UPlane streams (p. 4-17)

Possibility to lock the IP interface on Hybrid Iub

Overview
This feature allows locking of hybrid Iub IP BPs on the RNC. All the in-progress calls
assigned to the locked BP are released and the new incoming calls are assigned by call
admission control (CAC) to other available transport resources configured to carry the
same type of calls; for example, another available IP or ATM BP.
The locked BP is out of service and you can then perform maintenance operations on the
transmission network associated with the locked BP without affecting user traffic.
The unlock option brings the BP back into service so that new calls can again be assigned
to it by CAC.
Locking the IP interface on Hybrid Iub is used to simulate BP failure. This feature helps
to understand the impact of BP failure on in-progress calls, new incoming calls, and call
switching (ATM BP or other IP BP).
Note: Locking and unlocking of IP BwPool does not impact the continuity check.
For detailed procedural information on how to lock and unlock IP BP, see Locking
the IP interface on Hybrid Iub (p. 7-4).
