Concept/Topic Informational Writing

Length of Lesson 30 minutes

Standards Addressed Common Core State Standards

(Local or National CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.2

Standards) "Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic,

supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of

closure" (Common Core Standards Initiative, 2010).

Lesson Goals The goal of this lesson is that students will utilize technology to

create a rough draft with a main topic and at least three key

details.

Performance Objectives By the end of this lesson students will be able to:

create a rough draft using Popplet

identify a main topic and at least three key details

use their own words to share information about their

topic

Introduction Students will be introduced to a tool called Popplet, which

allows you to create mental maps and is a great visual aid for

main topic and key details. A live stream will be made

available to students, demonstrating how to use the tool to

create a rough draft of their informational writing.

Step-by-Step Procedures After viewing the livestream Popplet Tutorial, students may

move at their own pace to complete the tasks for the day.

1. Students will login to Popplet, either creating their own

account with their parents, or using the teacher login

information.

- if students create their own login they must email a

link to the teacher

- if students use the teacher login the teacher is able to

see their work and comment directly on it.

2. Using the notes taken the previous day on an arctic

animal, students must create a Popplet with a main

topic, at least three key details, and a concluding

sentence.

- students must write complete sentences, using their

own words, not just simply copying the sentences

from PebbleGo

3. When students are done they have the option of creating

a second Popplet on a second arctic animal.

- this is both a reteach moment and an enrichment

opportunity for students. The teacher may

recommend students who struggled with identifying

the main topic and details create a new Popplet

based on a new animal. Students who need

enrichment can use this as an opportunity to see how

many details they can add about an animal.

Assessment Based on The Popplet rough draft created by each student will be

Objectives reviewed by the teacher who will make comments and

suggestions to help improve their work. Teachers will use this

as a way to determine which students need to be retaught the

skills and which are ready to move on to the final step of the

unit.

Accommodations Teachers will be available to livestream at certain times during

the day. During these livestreams the teacher will share

information about how to create a Popplet and how to create

full sentences from the notes take the previous day.

Audio directions will be made available on the website to help

students and families who are not English Proficient.
