INHM Model
Build 3-D mesh layer by layer from 2-D mesh

Grid Builder 2-D mesh prefix

Base elevation default is zero

3-D mesh and Zone Numbering
Porous media properties

Although there are 3 zones,

they have identical properties
Surface flow media properties
Stream channel chosen elements
Flow initial conditions

Water table elevation

Negligible surface water at start

Surface flow outlet boundary conditions

Two bcs to differentiate fluid Prevents ponding around edges

balance output of domain
Rainfall
Nodes are chosen to create face sets

Rain stops after 3000 seconds

Newton-Raphson Iteration
Medium where
maximum test value
occurred
(e.g. pm is porous
Node # medium)

# of nonconverged
nodes, iteration stops
when this reaches zero
Adaptive timestepping
Specifying any control
turns on adaptive
timestepping
Early Fluid Balance

No discharge at outlet at
early time
Later Fluid balance

Discharge at outlet

Rain stops after 3000

Tecplot Solution Time
Variable
Tecplot Solution Time Variable
The simulation time is written to the
Tecplot solution time variable
The domain type is written as the zone
Title
Tecplot window with solution time variable

Current solution time

Solution time slider and controls

Time Animation Dialogue

Output times
become solution
times
Zone style dialogue

Multiple solution times are

Grouped together in one zone
Data Set Information Dialogue

There are still multiple zones

Active zone solution

time shown here
Multi-frame animation with linked
solution time
Synchronizing multi-frame
animations

Activate Link solution time to synchronize

multiple frames during animation
Solution Time Annotation
Add this text string to show the
solution time for the current zone
in an animation.

Optional text can be added as

desired.
Zone Title Annotation

Add this text string to show the zone (i.e.

domain) name
Order Frames
Activate a frame to edit
its appearance (plot variable,
contour interval, legend etc.)

The frame containing

the porous media
data is currently
active
Edit Active Frame

Make frame
transparent

Change the
name
Frame linking
Link (i.e. synchronize) attributes of
multiple frames such as:
Orientation
Contour interval
Size and position

Link size and position

of all frames
Tecplots Integration
Capability
Tecplots integration capability can be
used to answer questions like:

How much water is leaking

from a reservoir?

What is the volume of water in

a lake?
Animation of Reservoir impact
Tecplot Integration
The scalar integral of depth over all
cells gives volume versus time

If we want volume for a specific

area, we need to exclude other
areas by blanking
Value Blanking dialogue
Value blank by depth

Value blanking constraint 1:

depth <= 2 m
Value blanking formulas
How much water leaks from the reservoir?

Value blanking constraint 2:

line_blank >= -5264020 m
What is the volume of water in the lake?

Value blanking constraint 2:

line_blank <= -5264020 m
Net Precipitation versus
Evapotranspiration (ET)
Net Precipitation Approach

5/9/2012
Fluid Balance near steady-state

5/9/2012
ET Input requirements
Define An ET domain in grok file

Assign some ET
properties

Define potential
evapotranspiration rate
Shutting down ET

These values must be

greater than residual
saturation or ET cannot
shut down!
Plotting Individual ET Components
These ET components are
automatically written by HSPLOT as
Tecplot variables:
Surface water evaporation
Subsurface evaporation
Subsurface transpiration
Total ET
Data Set Information Dialogue

ET components appear as tecplot

variables

Although ET removes water from

subsurface nodes, the amounts are
accumulated and written to the
overland node at the top of the
column
Suppressing et output

Uncomment this instruction in the

plot_control file to prevent ET components
from being written to the tecplot file
Animation of Multiple ET components, Panday
example
Raster files
Raster files for Mesh Generation
and Material Property
Distribution
Unlike nprop files, raster files are independent
of the 2D mesh
Grid Builder and GROK have some utilities for
using rasters
