Childrens and Adolescents Literature In the Reading Program EDUC 580

Viterbo University
Summer 2017
Book Summary:
This multicultural book is about a girl that has just moved from Korea to America.
She is very anxious about the start of school. Since her name is very different
from her peers she tells them that she will choose a name by the following week.
Her peers think of names for her and place them into a jar. She attempts to be
these names, but struggles to identify with them. One of her classmates finds out
her real name and its significance. The name jar goes missing when it is time to
choose her name. Encouraged by her friends, she decides to keep her Korean
name Unhei, pronounced Yoon-Hey. This is a book about acceptance and
friendship as well as being proud of who you are.

Overview of the Project:

Second-grade students will engage in the book with multimedia tools. Students
will use reading strategies to activate their prior knowledge, learn new vocabulary,
comprehend the story and its underlying message, and reflect/review the book.

We chose this book because we feel our second graders will be able to relate to
the anxiety that comes at the beginning of the school year. Also, because it has
an important message to be proud of who you are. We feel it would be a great
read aloud at the beginning of the year.

Teachers can use this as a resource and can project videos/games with the links
onto a Smartboard for student use.
