Lesson Idea Name: Graphs of Quadratics

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 9

Content Standard Addressed: MGSE9-12.A.CED.1 Create equations and inequalities in one

variable and use them to solve problems. Include equations arising from linear, quadratic, and
exponential functions (integer inputs only).

Level 5: Expansion Level 6: Refinement

Lesson idea implementation: The Flipped Classroom assignment is to visit the class blog, watch the
video on quadratic equations, and then click the link to Desmos.com. On Desmos, the student will
graph a quadratic equation and generalize the coefficients of all variables. The students can
manipulate the coefficients and observe the effect on the plotted graph.
This lesson will take approx.. 20 minutes. We will have a short session when the students will
collaborate about what they learned with the Desmos exercise.
We will then discuss in large group,10 minutes. Quiz to assess knowledge acquisition.

Importance of technology: Students are more engaged when the lesson uses digital technology. The time we
live in is rich in web based instruction. This lesson could be completed without web-based instruction, but the
level of technology is increased with this method.

Inspiration (optional): My goal is to engage students, and to increase critical thinking. This Desmos
activity will help them identify relationships among the coefficients of the quadratic equation .
Internet Safety and Student Privacy: At any time that the students are using the internet to perform an activity,
proper observation must be used to ensure students under 13 years old cannot access improper materials. There
must be a list of parental access agreements and associated websites.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I want the students to experience the use and benefits
of Desmos. It is a fantastic tool for them to visually see the manipulations of the coefficients and how they
affect the graph of the curve. This will help them grasp a higher level of understanding of quadratic equations.
Other comments about your proposed activity: I believe the students will love this exercise, with the use of

technology, they will engage, and collaborate, and good rich meaningful discussion will result.
