The Day of the Lord Text 2 Metalonane 117 Key Verse: “That ye be not seen aa in mid, rte ong othr srt nor Dy worenor by ker as fem us at Alm: By the conclsion of ate ay of vies atta” ess the students wi ‘DThecalonine 22. SCuSS the ole of te man of Ca ‘Our loon vorves contain some of tho previous informa- tion we bavehad aboat the second coming ofeur Lord Ase stady them, we should realize two things, First, there are things that we cannot know about this event. Jesus plainly staed this in Matthew 246. Bven the angels in aver rot know all about the sean coming Ba we chould ais realize that altkoagh our kno limited, there are some thinge that are abesitaly certain Wo lenow thet Joous wll come again to this earth. Daily ‘This fact should not alarm | * ~,tgnomnt, ts; intend, should com |: Waugh forus. 7 “An often repeated pase | ae ati ‘used in connection with |, ‘those events is the dey of | Mae kn the Lard. This doo et | ante fer toa singe twenty | aia ta iS ‘he tare od fer, Reon that will take place arvund the return of the Lord to earth. ‘Whoa Jesus first appoared as a baby in Rothlebem,a series of ‘events, foreteld in. prophecy, and followed the ‘moment of Is actual birth, So itwill be when He comes again. Tiis time will be a time of great rejoicing for those who ‘know the Lord, but it will be atime of terror and dread for ‘those who do not. A bora-again child of God who has been seriptarally baptized and ie actively serving the Lord in a ‘New Testament church has absolutely nothing to dread or fear concerning the second coming of Jesus. "As we study these vorses, wo will not find the answers to ‘evory question we might have, but wo will find encourage- ‘ment and hope. 2 Thessalonians 2:1, 2 |. Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto im, 2. That yo be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, nek ther by spit, nar by word, nor by letter as from utae that the ‘day of Christ i at Nand. We must remember that the brethren in. Thessaonica ‘were siffering intense porsecution when these Vorsos wore ‘written. Perhaps some cf them thought that the events ofthe ‘end times were already upon them. Evidently, there were at Teast three sources of this notion. "First, there was the idea that someone had a special visita- ‘ion by'a spirit that had novealed thatthe day ofthe Lard was ‘upon them. Still others had used the power of words to form ‘arguments and convince others that this was the end of time. ‘There were even these who claimed that they had a letter ‘rom Paul himself that alladed to this event being near. ‘When we understand the intense suffering that these baliov- fers endured and combine it with the false claims of thase who were troubling them, we can easily see how they could be “shaken in mind” (verse 2 ‘This term shaken “means to be tossed about or agitated.” Te suggests a loss of stability and bearing, so that we do not ‘know what to expect. One thing we always need to keep in ‘mind is that, when we are shaken like this, we will cease our service to the Lord. When Satan ean shake oar faith, he can ‘easily load us to the wayside and stop every part of our ser= vies. We will stop praying, attending church, giving and wit. essing because we are unsure af what we believe. "These verses bascech us; literally, they are bogging us by ‘the coming ofthe Lord not to be troubled or shaken as we soe ‘the day of the Lord approaching. Instead, these events should offer great comfort and hope to the child of God. ‘When Jeaus comes again, He is coming to get thoce who believe Him and have flowed Him. He is not coming to pun- ish them, and we have a direct promise that we will be with Jesus forever. This is not an experience to dread; it is an_ ‘experience to anticipate and cherish. Ul. Do Not Be Deceived 2 Thessalonians 23,4 3. Let no man deceive you by any means:for tha day shall not ‘come, except there come a falling away frst, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perition; ‘4. Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called ‘God, or that is worshipped so that he as God sitteth in the tem ple of God, shewing himself that het God ‘The offect of many theories and disputations about the day ‘of the Lord is that some ean be decsived, Thore are two main ‘ways that min are deccived about these events. First, they deny that they will take place at all. Then they can be focled about the timing of the events. Some in Thessalonica were ‘deceived into believing that the day of the Lord was at hand. ‘This suggests that they either thought that it hed already ‘happened or was just about to happen. From our perspective of history we know that this was snot so, The Thessalonian brethren lived nearly two thou ‘sand years ago, yet, at this time they were convinced that it was near the end of time. Ged simply does not operate ‘according to our schedule. He is working out His wil in His ‘way, and we can never fully fathom all that He is doing (Rom. 11:33). ‘The day of the Lord is certain. The prophecies ofthe Bible ‘are more certain than history written by men. We can see ‘learly what has happened in the past. God ean seo as clear- ly what will happen in the future. God has declared that ccortain things must come to pass As wo read here, two ‘thinge will happen. First, there will be a falling away. That i, there will be a general weakening of the churches of the ‘Lord. Those who believe and practice the truth are referred ‘to as tho “salt of the carth’ (Matt. 5:18). Salt is a prosorva- tive and, in ways we cannot understand, saved poople actin ‘this capacity: When the preserving force of faith in Christ is lessened, then the second thing can take place. ‘The man of sin, the son of perdition, will be revealed. This is the being we often refer to as the anti-Christ. This creax ture is ao less than Satan incarnate. When he comes to the ‘earth clothed in flesh, Satan will do what he now does as a spirit. He will oppose all that God does. He will exalt him ‘self above God. He will replace true worship, in Spirit and in truth, with false worship. He will sit in the Temple of God ‘and purport that he himself is Gad. ‘This will bring about the wrath of God on this earth and ‘tho eventual destruction of our physical universe, We must always keep in mind that God has not appeinted those who ‘trust Him this wrath (1 Thess. 5:9). ‘Note that the man of ain is merely revealed here. Satan is already presont, and he ie constantly working to accomplish his evil purposes. At this time he will become obvious. The ‘sad thing is that lost humanity will indeed worship him, TIL Do Not Forget What You Have Been Taught 2 Thessalonians 5. Remember ye nat, that, when I was yet with you, Ito ‘you these things? 7.For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he ‘who now letteth wil let, until he be taken out ofthe way. '8. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord ‘shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy ‘with the brightness of his coming: 9. Even him, whose coming Is after the working of Satan “with all power and signe and fying wonders, 10, And with all deceivablenest of unrighteousness in them ‘that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, ‘that they might be saved. |. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, ‘that they should believe ale: 12. That they all might be damned who believed not the ‘truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. If we want to avoid confusion on any level, we must always keop in mind the solid certainties of our faith. Paul had {aught the brethren in Thessalonica about these evenis. Now ‘horominds thom of same of the things that thoy had learned, ‘Thon, 28 now, much proaching is done, but few lossons aro earned. This is why we need to hear the truth over and over. Here are some of the things that Paul taught the ‘Thessalonians about the day of the Lord. First, he taught them that God was greater that Satan, ‘The Holy Spirit of God is in control of time as well as eterni= ty. Gad is far more interested in timing than He is in timo. Tt, 4s the power of Ged that is withholding Satan and keeping ‘him from appearing prematurely. ‘Then Paul taught thom that the process that would lead ‘up tthe end of time was inevitably working in the affairs of ‘men, There is a struggle taksing place in the spirit world that ‘we can scarcely imagine. Satan is trying hi best to Chwart ‘the will of God in ail ways and in all matters, but he is hin dered and kept ia check bythe Holy Spisit God, ot Satan, {in ultimate contol ofthis world and al that iin st. Satan Will he revealed when Ged decides that he ean be revealed, Dut, when he is revealed, it will be wo his own destruction ‘end to the destruction ofall those who follow hira. "The Lord will iterally dostrey tho incarnate Satan, Even ‘though the coming of Satan inthe fesh will seem promising to lost hussanity, it will be doom wo Unem as well. Te coming ‘ofthis wicked one will be accompanied with great power and many signs. and lying wonders, ‘There is nothing. that ‘appears to suggest that any of this is counterfeit. No one ‘hoald be deceived about these miracles. Anything that tox ‘ifies that Satan is gronter than Cod ix ‘We must lear o put our trust in the Word of Gad even above and beyond our owa experiences. Jesus put it well ‘when Ho said) “Heaven and earth shall pase away, but my ‘words shall not pass away” Matt. 24:38). We can place our {lth in What we'see and know, but we will be wrong ifwe do. ‘We should place our faith in what God bas said. Everything ‘ls, including the man of sin, will pass away, but the Word ‘of God will remain. ‘Those who listen to the false premises of the man of sin hhave made spiritual decisions to noject tho truth. They have refused the love ofthe truth. They have sparned the love of God and the love of God's people. They have rejected Jesus (Christ as their personal Savior ond have made a deliberate
