Lesson Idea Name: Collaborate Learning: Chemical Reactions
Content Area: Chemistry
Grade Level(s): 9-12
Content Standard Addressed: SC3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about how the Law of
Conservation of Matter is used to determine chemical composition in compounds and chemical reactions.
a. Use mathematics and computational thinking to balance chemical reactions (i.e., synthesis,
decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, and combustion) and construct an explanation
for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in
the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties.

improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Lesson idea implementation: In this lesson students will be divided into groups and each group will get to
choose one type of chemical reaction, without any groups having the same type of reaction. Groups will then
have the responsibility of teaching the class about their chosen reaction type. Using iMovie students will
construct a short video about their reaction type and will show it to the class followed by a brief presentation
on real-world occurrences for that reaction.

Students are leading this first part of the lesson. After each reaction type is introduced by the groups, I, as the
teacher, will then lecture on the chemistry behind each reaction and go into more detail about their real-
world application. This lesson will work as an open inquiry project because the student will have no prior
content knowledge on the subject. They will be responsible for using all their available resources to compile
data and create their video.

Importance of technology: In this case the technology is a way to give the students more creative license.
They will have the freedom to use music, videos, still picture, voice-overs or whatever they choose. The
project could be assigned without the technology aspect but the students work would suffer and they would
not enjoy the project as much.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Before assigning this project student will need to be taught about
federal copyright regulation and reminded on safe internet search practices. Most of these students though
will be juniors and seniors in high school and should know what is and is not appropriate to click on.
Other comments about your proposed student multimedia authoring activity: Overall, I think this lesson
plan will provide a fun way to introduce the topic of chemical reactions. By creating this video students are
given voice and choice and as a result are having to take a leadership role in their education.
