SRT Rube Goldberg

The purpose of this project is to learn more about physics concepts that include kinetic
energy, potential energy, inertia, momentum and speed. The objective of this machine is to
pop the balloon.

If a car goes down the wedge and inclined plane and hits the nut, then the nut would go
down through the screw, and a marble rolls down the ramps, knocks all the dominoes, and
goes down the track smoothly, then the marble will weight down the cup and the pin on the
cup will pop the balloon because the pin is sharp and is directly aiming at the balloon.

The process of the machine started off by a toy car placed and pushed down the wedge
and inclined plane. Then the nut was hit by a toy car and the nut had travelled down and
through the screw. The nut had then hit a marble and had made the marble knock over the
dominoes (6) and the very last domino had hit another marble. Then the marble had rolled
and travelled down the inclined planes. After the marble, had travelled down the inclined
planes, the marble then had dropped into a plastic cup and its weight had pulled down the
tape. The metal chain dropped which made the cup with a screw on it collide with a balloon
and therefore the balloon pops. The objective was then achieved and accomplished.
There were two physics concepts used in the machine. The first physics concept was
change of motion (acceleration). The change of motion in the machine was the
acceleration of the marble that rolled, and when the marble had knocked over the
dominoes, the change of motion had slowed down and changed the speed it was going at.
The other physics concept was collision. Collision had occurred when the toy car had hit
the nut which made the nut slide down the screw, the marble had knocked the dominoes
over, when the pin on the cup hits/pokes the balloon. Those were the physics concepts that
were used and demonstrated in the machine.

The machine was planned and designed on a piece of paper. The first design of the
machine was very simple which only had a few steps and was not interesting at all. Then
the blueprint was redesigned. It had more steps and was more interesting since it had more
materials and simple machines.

The machine was easily constructed with some adult help with getting the wood sawed and
the holes drilled. Screws were screwed into the holes and into the wood and cylinder
cardboard tubes in its positioned spot.

The simple machines that were used was an Inclined Plane, a wedge, a screw and a
wheel and axle. The Inclined plane was helpful as it was there to let the marble and toy car
roll down. The wedge helped as it let the toy car go down. The screw was useful as a nut
went through it and made a cool effect to the machine. Lastly, the wheel and axle was the
car and an addition as a simple machine.
Which two physics concepts did you choose to demonstrate in your machine?
Collision
Change of motion (acceleration)

Define the concept, and use evidence to describe how it was used in your
machine.
Collision is where two objects strike against each other creating damage or effect to both.
Collision took place between the marble and the dominoes. As the toy car, had hit the nut is
made the nut go down and through the screw, When the marble had hit the dominoes, it
caused the dominoes to knock over. Collision also occurred when the pin had collided onto
the balloon causing the balloon to pop. Change of motion (acceleration) is where increase
or decrease in speed over time. Change of motion occurred when the toy car and the
marble had rolled down the track. The change of motion had changed when the toy car hit
the nut and when the marble had collided with the dominoes.

Define the concept, and use evidence to describe how it was used in your machine.

Potential Energy:

It has a potential to move but cannot move on its own. It is currently balanced. It needs to
be unbalanced so it can move. It was used in the machine where the potential energy was
the dominoes, balloon, and plastic cup - it needed an object to move it.

Kinetic Energy:

Kinetic energy is where it has been moved and is an unbalanced force. It was used in the
machine where the kinetic energy was the toy car, the dominoes and the plastic cup. It was
used where the toy car was placed and was let go of, the dominoes that were potential
energy and became a kinetic energy where it got knocked by the marble. It was also used
where the plastic cup, the potential energy became a kinetic energy where the weight of the
marble weighed the plastic cup down.

Inertia:

The more inertia an object has, the more energy/power is needed to make it move. Inertia
was used when the toy car had hit the nut and needed more power to move the nut since
the nut had more inertia, it needed more energy/power to move it and make it an
unbalanced force. It also occurred where the dominoes had more inertia and needed more
energy/power to make the dominoes move and get knocked over by the marble.

Momentum:

Momentum is when you gain speed as an object is moving. Momentum was used as both
the toy car and the marble where both objects had gained speed at the time when it
became an unbalanced force (when the toy car was pushed to start the machine and when
the marble was knocked over by the dominoes and rolled down the inclined planes.
Speed:

The rate at which something moves at a speed. Speed was used as both the toy car and
the marble as it had moved at a speed.

Conclusion and reflection:

The constructed Rube Goldberg machine had given a better understanding in the ways of
physics and how it all worked. It had demonstrated how each concept worked, displayed
the physics concepts that were used: collision and change of motion (acceleration). If there
were any future experiments, instead of things getting changed, things getting added
(simple machines) wouldve made it more interesting. Simple machines that would get
added like pulleys and levers. Therefore, it would create a more fascinating project to
create, watch and experiment.
