ELL225: Practice Problems I

Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi

1. An LTI system has the following transfer function

361
G(s) =
s2 + 16s + 361
(a) Evaluate the damping ratio and the natural frequency. Verify that the system is underdamped.
(b) Sketch an approximate response to a step input and label the peak time Tp , % overshoot Mp , and the settling
time Ts .

2. Find the allowable region in the s-plane for the poles of a transfer function of a second-order system if the system
response requirements for a step input are Tr 0.6 sec, Mp 10%, Ts 3 sec.

3. Find the transfer function YR(s)

(s)
for the following feedback system, where C(s) and G(s) denote the transfer functions
of the controller and the process, respectively.

Figure 1: Feedback control system

4. For problem 3, if the impulse response for the controller C(s) is given by e2t and the impulse response for the process
G(s) is given by et , find the response y(t) (as shown in Fig. 1) for a unit step input, i.e. r(t) = 1(t).
5. Suppose that the controller in Problem 3 is a PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller, i.e.

KI
C(s) = KP + + KD s
s
where KP , KI , KD are constant gains. Realize the PID controller using amplifiers (ideal OPAMP), resistors and
capacitors.
