Dear Colleague/Friend:

Re.: Survey on Newcomers and the Arts

I am writing to invite you to contribute to the attached survey that is a key part of the
development of a case study regarding the role of the arts in supporting the settlement
of newcomers to Canada. Initiated by Helen Yung of Creative DW, this research is
being led by charles c smith of the Arts Management Program/School of Creative and
Performing Arts, Lecturer for the course with the research assistance of Michael Scarfo.
Creative DW is an artistic and social enterprise that creatively challenges the
conventional goals and methods of settlement. For more information about Creative DW
please visit www.creativedw.com.

This case study seeks to explore the interests of newcomers/recent immigrants, artists,
social and arts organizations and funders (public and foundations) on the role of the arts
in supporting the settlement of newcomers. The purpose here is to look at the interests
of newcomers and artists, the mandates and services provided by selected
organizations and agencies as well as public and foundation arts and social/cultural
services policy-makers and funders, including funding options (if any) they provide.

The survey is designed to seek input from policy makers, arts and other funding bodies,
arts and social/cultural organizations and newcomers. These groups are being invited
to participate to ensure we get as full a picture as possible and that the results will
provide its readers students, arts policy and funding bodies, social services as well as
cultural and arts organizations - with ample opportunities to review, assess and critically
analyze the case study in such a way that they are able to draw knowledge and skills in
how to approach and work with the situation(s) the case study presents.

The information gathered for this case study will be accessible to the Principal
Researcher, the Research Assistant and Humbers research partner Creative DW. All
data gathered for this research will be treated as confidential and the raw data will be
safely stored and accessible only to the Principal Researcher. The only data that will be
shared will be that which is used to form the case study. No personal information
identifying any of the individuals interviewed and/or surveyed for this project will be
revealed to anyone without prior written consent.
