Last week we reflected back on Israels journey from when they left Egypt, up to
the time they received their inheritance. We have exposed the enemy during
our travels through the Book of Numbers, as Israel approached the Promised
Land. We also discussed the Harvest, and the time of distress linked to the
Feast of Shavuot. This week we start with the Book of Deuteronomy and will
reveal its significance in relation to the revelation of Messiah. We will also look
at the process of salvation in relation to the Jordan and what it means to us
today.

Introduction to the Book of Dvarim

Deuteronomy is the English name of this Book and
comes from the Greek word deuterous, that means
second, and is where we get the word ditto from. The
name of this Book in Hebrew is Dvarim, which means
words. The Jews call this book Misnah Torah or, the
repetition of the Torah, and it is a review of all the
teachings of Torah. When something is repeated in
Scripture it is very important, because it is as if YHVH is
underlining it, and emphasising its significance.
Deuteronomy is the fifth and last book of the Torah, which after completion, will
start the next cycle with Genesis. In the Western mind, time is linear, but in the
Hebrew mind, time is circular. Whenever a cycle is complete, a new one will
start, sometimes repeating something so you will benefit from the experience.
That is why YHVH allows us to be confronted with the same tests over and over
again so that we can grow and learn from our mistakes.
Q What other Book is found last in Scripture?
It is the Book of Revelation, the book that concludes the prophetic cycle,
revealing what will happen at the end of this cycle as well as the beginning of
the next cycle. This is what we have learned when we studied the Feast of
Shavuot, which represents the final Harvest, and the revelation of the Messiah
Yshua. Having this in the back of your mind, places Dvarim (Deuteronomy) in
the same category. It completes the prophetic cycle and reveals what will
happen in the next cycle, finally revealing the Messiah.

1
The revelation of Messiah is connected to the
word dvarim (words) that is the plural of
davar or Word, where Yshua is referred
to as the living Word. This places the Book of
Revelation, (revealing Yshua the Messiah -
title of this Book), and Deuteronomy (Davar
the Living Word), in the same category, both
revealing Yshua as the Messiah, Who is the
Word of YHVH.
This is confirmed by the fact that the book of Deuteronomy was quoted by
Messiah Yshua more times than any other book of the Tanakh (OT). It is also
the most quoted book of the Berit Chadashah (New Testament) with some
eighty different references being attributed to it. When we study this book, we
must try to see Yshua as well as hear Messiah speak to us as if we are right
in front of Him, listening to His words or dvarim.
Deut 17:18 "Now it shall come about when he sits on the throne of his
kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a scroll in the
presence of the Levitical priests. 19"It shall be with him and he shall read
it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear YHVH his Elohim, by
carefully observing all the words of this law and these statutes.
Another interesting fact about Yshua relating to Deuteronomy is that a King had
to write his own copy of the Torah by which to govern His people. This makes
Dvarim the copy of the Torah by which Yshua the King Who will rule His
people with His copy of the Torah and proof that Yshua could not have
abolished the Torah, abolishing His Kingship.
The Rabbis teach that the Book of Dvarim is the Torah's "mouth" speaking to
the ears of His people. The mouth summarizes all that has gone before in
the "main body" of the Torah, so that the people can shma, hear and obey.
Rabbi Avraham Greenbaum has the following to say about this Book;
Dvarim calls to the inner ear of the soul of Yisrael to hear the essential
message of the Torah. Each of the twelve months of the year is integrally
connected with one of the twelve tribes and one of the twelve basic human
faculties, according to Hebrew thought. This month, the month of Av, the fifth
month, corresponds to the Tribe of Shimon and the faculty of hearing as noted in
Breshith / Genesis 29:33, speaking of how Shimons name is related to shma.
It is significant that the phrase "Shma Yisrael! Hear, O Israel!" recurs in four key
passages in the book of Dvarim.
It was through the mouth that the qol or Voice, that walked in the Garden,
spoke with Adam and Eve before they sinned. The Mouth and Voice are the
Words of YHVH spoken by Yshua the King, and we as His subjects must hear
(shma) and obey if we are part of His Kingdom.

The Second Law

Deuteronomy literally means Second Law. This is not to imply that a First
Law is being replaced by a Second, as you will clearly see when you read
through this Book, but is merely a repeating of the Torah principles to the
children of Israel. This principle was discovered when we studied Parashah 35,
looking at the two Arks.

2
One Ark was built by Bezalel and this Ark was covered with gold (Exo 37). The
other Ark was built by Moses, this Ark was just a wooden box (Deut 10). The
First Law or set of Commandments were broken and eventually placed in the
wooden Ark. The Second Law occurred when the new Tablets were placed in
the Golden Ark. They were the exact same tablets, but the second set replaced
the first set without changing their context. This is the picture of the Old
Covenant and the New Covenant, the new replaced the old, restoring and
repackaging it, but still contained the same message. Dvarim or Deuteronomy
confirms this by repeating the words already given.
Q Why are the words or Commandmants repeated?
The Commandments were repeated because the majority of the Israelites were
then about 20 years of age. The old generation had died in the wilderness so
Moses was addressing the younger generation. Moses reviewed the failures of
their parents so they could learn from the previous generations mistakes.
Personal Application: The important principle we can learn from this is to
teach our children the Ways of YHVH, so they can learn from the things we
have done wrong. They will gain wisdom by learning from our mistakes and
experience.
We have all made mistakes in our lives, and we have all failed many times.
The important thing to understand is that we should never waste a good
failure. By using all our failures for good, we can teach others from our
mistakes so they can learn from us and our failures will become stepping
stones for the next person.
Isa 40:3-4 A voice is calling, "Clear the way for YHVH in the
wilderness; Make smooth in the desert a highway for our Elohim. 4"Let
every valley be lifted up, And every mountain and hill be made low;
Your failures are like the valleys that can be lifted up to help others, and your
pride is like the mountains, that will be made low. Everything you have done
wrong can be used for good and can be elevated but the good things you
like to make public, are the things that can be made low through humility, by
not mentioning it. When we are weak, He is strong, and our weaknesses are
used as strengths. If we allow this, then YHVH will make your ways straight,
and the rough ground you travel on will become smooth.

Outline of the Book of Deuteronomy

Deuteronomy is not only a repetition of the Torah (Law), because out of the 100
mitzvot or Commandments in Deuteronomy. 70 are new, having not been
previously mentioned in the other books of the Torah. The book is broken up in
the following way:
Chapters 1 4: Introductory Speech and Historical review
Chapters 5 26: Main dissertation Laws given at Sinai
Chapters 27 28: Covenant Blessings and Cursing for Obedience and
Disobedience
Chapters 29 -30: Warnings, Promised Blessings, Repentance Restoration
Chapters 31 through 34: revert to the narrative style in the books
conclusion of Moses' final Acts, Words, Prophecies, and record of death.

Timeframe of Deuteronomy
When we studied the Book of Numbers (midbar), we placed it in the timeframe
between the Red Sea, after Israel left Egypt, and their crossing of the River
Jordan, prior to entering the Promised Land.

Q - Where does the Book of Deuteronomy fit into this timeframe?

Deut 1:1 These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the
Jordan in the wilderness, in the desert ...
Last week we saw that the Feast of Shavuot is the Feast of The Harvest, that
symbolises the time of the River Jordan. The time of the Harvest is also known
as the Time of the Great Tribulation (See detail in last weeks teaching on
Shavuot). In this verse, Moses addressed the people at the river Jordan,
prophetically pointing to the time prior to the river of judgement, the time of the
Last Generation. This place the Book of Deuteronomy in the timeframe of the
banks of the River Jordan prior to the Great Tribulation. This is when YHVH is
repeating His Words (dvarim) and His Commandments to the Last Generation
prior to the Second Coming of King Yshua.
We have looked at the Jordan River before, but here
are a few more interesting facts.
The Jordan River drops rapidly in a 75 kilometre run to
the Hula Lake which is slightly below sea level in the
Galilee area. Then it drops, much more, to 690 feet
below sea level at the Sea of Galilee. The river
continues out of the Sea of Galilee and falls till it
reaches the Dead Sea which is 1,290 feet below sea
level (lowest place on earth) and has no outlet. You
should take note that this River has run the gamut from
the clear, clean mountain water to the dead and lifeless
water ending at the Dead Sea.
The River Jordan has four sources:
1. Mount Hermon comes through a spring at Banias
2. The Hasbani stream which flows from Lebanon
3. The Dan springs whose source is also Mount Heron
4. The Iyon stream which flows from Lebanon
Two sources come from Mount Hermon and two from Lebanon. Mt. Hermon is a
series of three peaks on the border of Syria and Lebanon. It is one of the
proposed mountains for the transfiguration.

4
Mt. Tabor is another mountain that has traditionally been considered the Mount
of Transfiguration. Mt. Tabor is found in Lower Galilee. The Transfiguration was
an event in the New Testament when Yshuas glory was revealed to those with
Him. This was a visual representation of Heaven meeting Earth.
Tabor means mound that comes from the root word tevar which
means brokenness or to break into pieces. After Yshuas transfiguration, He
was broken and bruised for our sin and iniquities so He could restore His
Creation that had been broken into pieces.
Lebanon means whiteness that comes from the root word lavan
which means to be white, to make white, to be purified, to make bricks.
Spiritual Insight: We can glean from these two meanings the intent of the
Great Tribulation as depicted by the sources of the Jordan River of
Judgement. Firstly, the time of distress is to destroy and break into pieces
the system of Babylon, the system that is built with the bricks made in
Egypt, based on sin, lies, confusion and bondage. Secondly, it is to purify
humanity so that their brokenness can be healed and they can be clothed in
white, standing before the Throne of YHVH after being Saved as a result of
the Great Tribulation (Rev 7:9).
Jordan originates from the verb yarad meaning to
descend. Thus the meaning of the Jordan becomes
the descender, moving from a place of prominence to
one of lesser importance. For example to go down to
Egypt has the overtone of leaving the Promised Land
to dwell among people outside the covenant:
Isa 31:1 Woe to those who go down to
Mitsrayim for help, and rely on horses, who
trust in chariots because they are many, and in
horsemen because they are very strong, but who
do not look to the Set-apart One of Israel, nor seek
YHVH!
Conversely, to go up or to ascend, was to alah.
Today people who immigrate to Israel are said to make
aliyah. In the Scriptures, we see it in reference to
going up to Jerusalem, those who are in Covenant
with Him:
Ezra 1:3 Who is among you of all His people? His Elohim be with him!
And let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the House of
YHVH Elohim of Israel He is Elohim which is in Jerusalem.
Q - If Jordan means descending, what is the significance of descending?
This is linked to the last part of the Hebrew word for Jordan, which is dan
meaning judgment, as already revealed. Those who go down are related to
Egypt, and are people who are not part of YHVHs Covenant but are in sin and
bondage, and will be judged (separated). This is depicted by the place the River
Jordan ends, namely the Dead Sea or the Salt Sea. Its surface and shores are
430.5 metres (1,412 ft) below sea level, Earth's lowest elevation on land, and
supports no life.

5
The Jordan River in our Torah reading posed as a barrier to entry into the
Promised Land. If you are swept away by this river, you will end up in the place
of death. How would they be able to stop the flow of judgments? The only way
was to stop the flow of the Jordan River! In the book of Joshua, YHVH stopped
the flow of the River at a place called Adam, for those who were connected to
the Ark of the Covenant.
Joshua 3:16 that the waters which came down from upstream stood
still, and rose in a heap very far away at Adam, the city that is beside
Zaretan. And the waters going down into the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt
Sea, were completely cut off.
Literally declaring the Almighty has chosen to stop the flow of judgment going
all the way back to the first man, Adam, for those who are in Covenant with
Him!

Ascending Back to Eden

Another meaning ascribed to the word Jordan
comes from a contraction of the Hebrew meaning
descending from Eden. It was a spring-fed
stream of living water that flowed out from Eden to
water the earth.
Gen 2:10, 12-14 And a river went out of
den to water the garden, and from there it
divided and became four riverheads. 11 The
name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of
Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good.
Bdellium and the onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is
Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush. 14 The
name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one which goes toward the
east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
Q Where have we heard about four river heads before?
When we looked at the River Jordan in the previous section, we saw that it
originated from four sources, flowing into one destination, namely the Dead Sea
or Salt Sea, where no life is found. In contrast to this, the river that originated
from the Garden of Eden (Presence of YHVH), flowed from a place where the
Tree of Life was found. Connecting these two thoughts gives us the origin of all
life, flowing down from where YHVH is, to the physically fallen world through
four sources, and finally culminating in one last River, the River of Judgement,
where the chaff is gathered. This last River stands in between us and the
Kingdom, and if we are gathered during the Final Harvest, we will be restored
back to the Garden of Eden, with access to the Tree of Life.
Rev 22:1-2, 14-15 Then he showed me a river of the water of life, clear
as crystal, coming from the throne of Elohim and of the Lamb, in the
middle of its street. 2 On either side of the river was the tree of life,
bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the
leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 14 Blessed are those
who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life,
and may enter by the gates into the city.

6
15Outside
are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and
the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices
lying.
These four rivers that spring froth from the Garden are the channels through
which the covenant people of YHVH enter into the Garden again.
We will now look at each one of these rivers and see how they all play a role in
restoring the Garden of Eden, coming from the River of Judgement.
1. The first river is Pishon that skirts out to Havilah. Pishon comes
from the root word push meaning to spring up, to grow and to spread.
Havilah means circle and its root word chol , which means bring
forth, grieved, tremble, travail, to dance. This sounds like the people who will
give birth during the time of the Tribulation, who will go through grief and pain,
but will be happy and danced for joy. The fruits of their labour will be the newly
born believers that will spring up and grow spiritually during this time of
distress, entering YHVHs Garden of Shalom.
2. The Second River is Gihon that comes from the root word giyach
meaning to draw forth, to gush forth like water, labour to bring forth.
Giyach is found in Judges Chapter 20 where Pinchas stood up with the armies
of Israel to go up into battle against the sons of Benyamin, also known as the
Sons of Belial, the lawless ones. Remember Benyamin is from the House of
Israel but they represent the lawless ones who plunder and killed YHVHs
people. (Read the context of Judges 20). The symbolism of the River Gihon is
prophetically pointing to Messiah (depicted by Pinchas), leading His troops
against the lawless ones, releasing and bringing forth His people from their
attacks and bondage, and raising the standard of His Word to go out like a
strong stream and a powerful gush of water.
Matt 7:21-23 Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter
the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in
heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not
prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many
wonders in Your name? 23 And then I will declare to them, I never knew
you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!

3. The Third River is Hiddekel meaning

rapid and also referred to as the Tigris River.
Hiddekel can be broken up into two parts; chad
meaning sharp and qal meaning rapid,
light, sound and voice. Put together these two
meanings describe the sharp voice also known
as the two-edged sword that comes from the
mouth of Messiah Yshua during His second
coming.
Heb 4:12 For the word of Elohim is living and powerful, and sharper
than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and
spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and
intents of the heart.

7
2 Thes 2:8 Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will
slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance
of His coming;
Rev 1:16 In His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth
came a sharp two-edged sword; and His face was like the sun shining in
its strength.
Rev 2:12, 16 "And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: The
One who has the sharp two-edged sword says this. 16 'Therefore repent;
or else I am coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them
with the sword of My mouth.
The purpose of the sword from His mouth is to speak words of judgement, first
to the Seven Churches (Rev 2:12), and then to judge the nations (Rev 2:16).
His appearance will be rapid, like lighting appearing in the sky as Matt 24
describing the sign of the Son of man.
Matt 24:29-31 Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun
will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall
from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then the
sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the
earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds
of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels
with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect
from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
This reveals that you will enter the Garden of Eden if you are gathered when
this sign of the Messiah appears after the Great Tribulation. Remember the
Book of Deuteronomy is all about revealing the Messiah Who is Yshua.
4. The Fourth River is the Euphrates that is the
word perath meaning fruitfulness. This river is
associated with those who bore fruit as followers of
YHVH. This is summarised in the parable of the
talents in Matthew Chapter 25:
Matt 25: 14-31 For the kingdom of heaven
is like a man traveling to a far
country, who called his own servants and
delivered his goods to them. 15 And to one he
gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to
his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. 16 Then he who
had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made
another five talents. 17 And likewise he who had received two gained two
more also. 18 But he who had received one went and dug in the ground,
and hid his lords money. 19 After a long time the lord of those servants
came and settled accounts with them. 20 So he who had received five
talents came and brought five other talents, saying, Lord, you delivered
to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides
them.21 His lord said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; you
were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things.
Enter into the joy of your lord. 22 He also who had received two talents
came and said, Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained
two more talents besides them.

8
23 His lord said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; you have
been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things.
Enter into the joy of your lord. 24 Then he who had received the one
talent came and said, Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where
you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered
seed. 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground.
Look, there you have what is yours. 26 But his lord answered and said to
him, You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not
sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. 27 So you ought to have
deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have
received back my own with interest. 28 Therefore take the talent from
him, and give it to him who has ten talents. 29 For to everyone who has,
more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does
not have, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the
unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and
gnashing of teeth.
The talents are the truth that has been revealed to you and the fruit is how you
multiplied that truth in your life. Those who receive the basic truth regarding
YHVH and do nothing about it, will not enter through this river, but will be
swept away down the Jordan into the Dead Sea, where they will end up with
the rest of the chaff that have been separated during the final Harvest.
In Summary: The Four Rivers that lead back into Eden are the four areas that
will be weighed prior to entering the Kingdom. These areas are:
Pishon - This represents the Bride who helps to give birth and look
after the new believers who were born prior to and during the time of The
Harvest. They will enter in singing and dancing for joy.
Gihon represents those who follow and obey the Commandments, who
did not become part of the House of Benyamin, the sons of Belial, the
lawless ones. Benyamin represents Christian believers who came from
the same mother as Joseph, and prophetically points to the nations
coming in through the teaching of the Gospel Message of Yshua. Those
who teach and do His Commandments will be called great in the
Kingdom of YHVH (Matt 5:19).
Hiddekel represents the Messiah Yshua Who will come and make war
with the Sword of His mouth. Those who submit under His Authority and
listen to His reproofs (7 Churched, Rev 2 & 3), will enter into the
Kingdom.
Euphrates This river is associated with the last Festival, the Feast of
Ingathering where the fruit will be harvested. Those who multiplied
what has been entrusted to them, will receive a reward and enter into the
Kingdom. Those who heard the truth and did nothing about it, will be
swept away by the River Jordan that leads to the place of separation
(death).

9
The Red Sea, The Jordan and the Two Mikvahs
Now in our Parashah in Dvarim, Moses is relating to
the people their past, and implying there is a need for
corporate repentance due to the sins of their
forefathers. Then very shortly, they will walk through
the Jordan River. This is the same area where
hundreds of years later, John will be baptizing for
repentance!
John 1:26-18 John answered them, saying, I
baptize with water, but there stands One
among you whom you do not know. 27 It is He
who, coming after me, is preferred before me,
whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.
28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John

was baptizing.
John was baptizing Israelites in the Jordan.in the same area where we have
the children of Israel about to walk through the Jordan River to enter into the
Promised Land! This is a repeat of the very footsteps of those following Joshua
into the Promised Land! Notice another similarity. When Joshua took them
through the Jordan, look what was in the middle of the river:
Josh 3:17 And the priests bearing the ark of the covenant of YHVH stood
firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan. And all Israel passed clean
over on dry ground, until all the nation had completely passed over the
Jordan.
Pass clean over is the phrase, abar tamam abar Pass and over is the
word abar that means to pass through or pass over. This has to do with
the mikvah or baptism that results in you receiving the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized every one of
you in the Name of Yshua the Messiah for the forgiveness of your sins,
and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit of YHVH is represented by the letter yod y that means hand or
helper. If you add the letter yod to abar it becomes ibree that means
Hebrew. This proves that the act of baptism is symbolic for crossing the Jordan
into the Promised Land (in the spiritual), and indicating that you are saved. As
a sign of this, YHVH gives you the Holy Spirit (like an engagement ring) on your
hand (yod). This shows that you are now part of His Family and will become a
Hebrew (ibree), if you crossed over, with the help of the Spirit.
Abar is used twice which implies that you have to cross over twice, the first
time at the Red Sea and the second time at the River Jordan. This means that
your salvation depends upon these two crossings in your life, where you
have to make the right decision in order to pass over dry land, without being
affected by the judgement of either of these crossings. The first crossing is
when you accept YHVHs Authority, by accepting Yshua as your Master and
Saviour. This goes hand in hand with the first mikvah at the Red Sea or water
baptism as well as the Mountain and YHVHs Commandments.

10
Gal 3:27 For as many of you as were baptized into Messiah have put on
Messiah.
Yshua is the Word and the Word is compared to water. When you have been
baptised at the first crossing, you commit to immerse yourself in His Word and
put on Messiah so to speak. This is when you move out from under the
authority of the Serpent (Pharaoh), and submit under the Authority of YHVH
(His Word, His Messiah).
The second abar or cross over point is represented by the Jordan. That is
where you will be confronted with the waters that can drag you down to the
place of death (Dead Sea). Since this place of decision is associated with a
mikvah (baptism), it relates to the second baptism, namely the baptism of the
Spirit by fire.
Matt 3:11 I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is
coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to
carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
The first baptism is performed by man but the second mikvah will be performed
by Messiah himself. The first medium was water that represents His Word, the
second medium will be fire, which represents YHVHs Holiness (Deut 4:24, Heb
12:29). This means that the requirement to pass over the second crossing is
Holiness. He commanded us to be holy for He is Holy (Lev 20:26, 1 Pet 1:16).
The middle word of this phrase is clean or tamam meaning to
complete, accomplish, cease, be clean, end, come to the full, fulfil, be (make)
perfect, be spent, sum, be (show self) upright, be whole.
The purpose of crossing over is to be made complete, to be cleansed and
prepared as the Bride of Messiah through aspiring to holiness. Yes you have
submitted under His authority and have submersed yourself in the water of His
Word, but are you pursuing His Holiness? Both are required as part of crossing
over, and accepting His hand in marriage. You become part of YHVHs Family
by becoming Hebrew.
John 3:5 Yshua answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born
of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of Elohim.
