Introduction

1 Introduction
The Bore alignment application is a part of the PRFTECHNIK
ALIGNMENT CENTER and allows displaying bore alignment
measurements taken with PRFTECHNIK Alignment instruments. You
can also change measurement file settings and create measurement
templates.

Overview of Bore alignment functions:

The Bore alignment Application can be used for the following:

Displaying measurements created with measurement instruments
from PRFTECHNIK Alignment in two and three dimensional
views
Creating, deleting and adjusting properties of all overhaul
components
Adjusting and printing measurement reports
Creating overhaul templates in preparation of measurements
Manually entering measurement values
Displaying misalignment of measured elements in reference to
either standard or optimized laser line
Including specified presets when displaying results

2 Overview of workspace
The Bore alignment application provides a number of different views
of the templates and measurement data. These are the Dimensions
view, the Measurement view and the Results view. These views are
similarly arranged and the common features are described in this
section. Details on each of the views can be found in the Views
section.

3.4 Working with templates

A template is a file, in which the overhaul and all measurement
planes have already been preliminarily set up for a specific machine
(e.g. a turbine). Every time you measure this particular unit, you can
use this file as a template. This is useful for the following reasons:
The measurements are always taken at exactly the same
measurement points.
Using a template saves time because you do not have to set up a
new measurement file every time you measure the same object.

This section contains the following topics:

Creating a new template

Saving a template
Deleting a template
To set up templates, see Setting up templates and measurement
files.

3.4.1 Creating a new template

1. Click on File New...
The Template Assistant dialog appears:

2. The following properties must be defined in the dialog:

Number of bores (3) the number of elements of the
overhaul.
Bore intervals (4) the distance between consecutive
elements of the overhaul. The bore intervals value will be
determined automatically by the application when the first
two properties are defined by the user.
All the properties set in the Template Assistant window are
initial properties required in order to create the overhaul. These
properties can all be subject to change and readjustment later
on.
3. Enter the required dimensions: When you click in a particular
field, the respective dimension is shown in the diagram in the
window on the left (1).
4. Click on Finish after all needed properties are correctly entered.

used for current measurement and the serial number of the sensor.

The tool bar also presents the Points measured diagram, which
shows the layout of the measured points along the circumference of
the bore, i.e. the angular positions, at which the measurements were
taken.
These points are only shown for sensor measurements.
The color of the diagram reflects the overall quality of the selected
measurement.

3.5.5.2 Quality tool bar

This toolbar presents the quality of the selected measurement.

Bore alignment application 41

Functions

Measurement quality directly corresponds to measurement reliability.

The overall quality of a measurement may be influenced by a number
of factors that are involved in calculation of the resulting
measurement reliability.
The number and type of factors appearing in the Quality tool bar may
vary depending on which measurement mode was used to take the
current measurement.

3.5.5.3 Analyze tool bar

The aim of the Analyze tool bar is to enable the user to view the raw
measurement results (i.e. points measured at a given measurement
position) and evaluate how well they reflect the curve of the
measured element.
In theory, a bored element should be perfectly circular. In practice in
most cases, measured elements prove to be a little deformed, which
gives an ellipse as a measurement result.

42 Bore alignment application

Functions

3.5.5.3.1 Measurement info

The left part of the Analyze tool bar provides general information on
the currently selected measurement:
Calculation mode: Current ellipse approximation algorithm. The
algorithm can be selected from the Edit pulldown menu. Read on
to learn more about the ellipse calculation modes.
Active: The number of active measured points in the
measurement. The number signifies the count of points taken
along the curvature of the bore, which are taken into account
during final measurement result calculations.
Inactive: The number of deactivated measured point. Deactivated
point are excluded from final result calculations.
Angle: The angle covered along the curvature of the bore during
measurement.
SD: Standard deviation value calculated for the measurement.

3.5.5.3.2 Ellipse diagram

The right section of the Analyze tool bar is occupied by the ellipse
diagram, which shows the graphical representation of the
measurement results measured points and calculated ideal ellipse
(blue line).
The manner, in which the measured points and ellipse are presented
depends on which of the following viewing modes is currently
selected:
Oval
In this view mode you can see the
calculated ellipse curve and all the
points that were measured during the
measurement at the current
measurement element.

Bore alignment application 43

Functions

Sensor
In this mode the diagram represents
the measurement plane of the sensor.
It enables viewing the spread of
measurement points on the sensors
detector.

Line
In this mode the ellipse is shown as a
horizontal axis scaled with angles
ranging from -180 to 180. The vertical
axis in this diagram shows distance
from the ellipse.
This mode facilitates checking
absolute distances of consecutive
measured points from the curvature of
the calculated ellipse.

A desired ellipse viewing mode can be selected from the View

pulldown menu.

3.5.5.3.3 Ellipse calculation modes

Ellipse calculation modes allow selecting the best ellipse
approximation algorithm for the measurement.

Circle XY, Phi These algorithms should be used when the sensor bracket
rods are short and rigid.
Ellipse XY, Phi
In such case both X and Y values are reliable, which
guaranteesd more precise results, because of greater
number of calculations parameters (X values are included).

Circle Y, Phi These algorithms should be used when the sensor bracket
rods are long and/or non-rigid.
Ellipse Y, Phi
In such cases, the sensor bracket rods may tend to sag as
the sensor is rotated towards the horizontal position,
which in turn will affect the accuracy measurement result.
This behavior is easy to detect by observing the standard
deviation values - SD values greater than 0.03 mm may
indicate that the measurement result is distorted.
In such situation a Y Phi method should be used - this will
ensure more reliable results as the distorted X parameter
will be discarded.

44 Bore alignment application

Functions

You can select appropriate ellipse calculation mode by choosing

corresponding option from the Edit pulldown menu.

3.5.5.4 Laser trend tool bar

Laser trend tool bar displays the laser drift values in both horizontal
(red) and vertical (blue) directions on the same graph. It enables the
user to check laser drift occurrence during measurements.
Presence of significant laser drift means reduced measurement
accuracy. Laser drift may appear due to different external causes,
such air turbulence, heat or machine vibrations. Laser drift tends to
increase considerably when performing measurements over long
distances.

3.5.6 Manipulating laser setups

In the Bore alignment application, the user can manipulate laser
setups by adding new setups and delete existing ones.
In order to start editing laser setups you have to go to the Laser setup
list tool bar:

3.6.7 Working with presets

Horizontal and vertical presets can be assigned to overhaul
components to compensate changes in measured element's
dimensions and location in working conditions.
These changes are usually caused by thermal growth of a machine
and sags of elements such as rotor shafts.
Preset values reflect these changes and allow taking them into
account when the necessary alignment corrections are calculated.
Presets can be defined for individual overhaul elements as well as for
machines, subassemblies and the entire overhaul.
Presets are always assigned to reference planes, at which they are
being applied during computations. Complex elements and groups
consist of multiple measurement and result planes. That is why two
reference planes must be defined when setting up presets for complex
elements.

3.6.7.1 Entering presets for simple overhaul elements

To set presets for a simple element, which contains only one plane
(e.g. simple bore or bearing), do the following:
1. Select the element by pointing it and pressing the left mouse
button.
2. Go to the Presets toolbar.
3. Enable presets by marking the Presets Enabled check box.
4. Enter the vertical preset value for the element in the V box and
the horizontal preset value for the element in the H box.
You can ignore the plane combo box as simple elements have
only one possible reference plane.

3.6.7.2 Entering presets for complex overhaul elements

To set presets for a complex element, which contains multiple planes

(e.g. long bore or complex bore), do the following:
1. Select the element by pointing it and pressing the left mouse
button.
2. Go to the Presets toolbar.
3. Enable presets by marking the Presets Enabled check box.
4. Select the first reference plane from the Plane combo box in the
First section of the toolbar.

the Last section of the toolbar.
7. Enter the vertical preset value for the second reference plane in
the V box and the horizontal preset value in the H box.

3.6.7.3 Entering presets for groups

Procedure for setting up presets for machines and subassemblies is

similar to procedure for complex elements:
1. Select an existing group by clicking the left mouse button inside
its borders.
2. Go to the Presets toolbar.
3. Enable presets by marking the Presets Enabled check box.
4. Select the first reference plane from the Plane combo box in the
First section of the toolbar.
5. Enter the vertical preset value for the first reference plane in the
V box and the horizontal preset value in the H box.
6. Select the second reference plane from the Plane combo box in
the Last section of the toolbar.
7. Enter the vertical preset value for the second reference plane in
the V box and the horizontal preset value in the H box.

3.6.7.4 Using presets in result calculations

3.7.4 Saving the report

The report can be saved in one of the following formats:
HTML: Reports of this format can only be moved to another
location if the associated graphics files are also moved. They are
located in the same directory and can be identified by the time at
which they were created.
MHTML: This format can be used if you want to send the report
to another computer or save the report in another location. All
required elements are integrated in the file. This guarantees that
the contents of the report will remain intact even if it is moved to
another location. The disadvantage is that the file size is larger
than that of the HTML format.
CSV: comma separated values file. This is a very simple and
universal data file format, which will be recognized by most
database and spreadsheet application. It is recommended if you
plan to process measurement data contained in the report in other
software applications.
There are two methods of saving a file:
