ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

QUESTION 1: (25 MARKS)

Suppose you are the IT manager of the company Emtelcom, the main ISP and
telephony provider of your country. In an attempt to make the company resilient
especially in event of failures, you wish to carry out an operational risk
assessment on the daily operations. Describe how you will perform the
operational risk management. List the main steps first then use real world
examples to explain each aspect. (25 Marks)

QUESTION 2: (25 MARKS)

(a) Some researches have shown that stand-alone ERP systems actually have
some limitations. List three limitations of such systems. (3 Marks)

(b) There are many technologies that help to overcome the above mentioned
limitations. List five of these technologies when used in conjunction with the
ERP package, they help to overcome the limitations stated. (5 Marks)

(c) Explain what Management Information System is and list its four main
characteristics. (6 Marks)

(d) Explain what Decision Support System is and list its four main characteristics.

(e) Decision Support System (DSS) can be used in combination with


Management Information System (MIS) in an ERP package. Explain how the
Decision Support System differs from Management Information System.

QUESTION 3: (20 MARKS)

(a) CMTInd & Co is a company in the textile industry. Currently each of its
departments, namely, HR, Finance & Accounting, Purchasing, Operations,
Sales and Stock are having separate information systems. The director
appoints you as a consultant in an attempt to identify and improve the IT
infrastructure so as to allow the company to become competitive. Identify the
possible problems that the current IT systems will bring about and support
each problem listed with valid reason. (12 Marks)

(b) Enterprise systems facilitate value chain management. Value chain is the
system of activities that transform inputs into outputs valued by the customer.
State four means how value can be created in this context. (4 Marks)

(c) Explain how an Enterprise System can assist a firm in optimizing its value
system. (4 Marks)

QUESTION 4: (30 MARKS)

Soni music, a worldwide music distributor is thinking to reengineer its sales


process in an attempt to become more competitive in the music industry. In this
context, the company has sought your services as an IT consultant. Describe
how you will implement a Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) Strategy to re-
engineer the main Sales process of the company. List the key steps first then
build up the strategy over the listed steps. (30 Marks)
