Many other runescape players are smithing rune two-handed swords (R2H) and it is believed
to be effective, efficient and sometimes even profitable. I also claim that smithing R2H's is
probably the best smithing method in terms of efficiency calculated as a weighted average of
the costs per experience and experience per hour. However, the right items have to be used in
order to make it this efficient. This guide is not meant for free-to-play because it heavily relies
on saving rune bars.
The next pages describes the assumption and guidelines I used and shows how profitable
smithing R2H was (and is) in terms of money and experience using my method.
2. Method
Buying rune bars in bulk is done at the cheapest possible Grand-Exchange (GE) price. Every
night I bought and sold one rune bar to observe the 'flip prices' and put the desired amount of
rune bars into the GE for the 'insta-sell price' (plus one coin).
Another necessary item are the portable forges. Portable forges is one of the main reasons
why smithing R2H's is profitable in the first place. These forges have a 10% chance per bar to
save each of the bars in use, which will be send to the bank. A secondary benefit is that it
provides 10% additional experience on smithed R2H. Obtain at least 30, so you can activate
them if the disaster arises that the host of the world logged out.
The third necessary item is the scroll of efficiency (SoE). The scroll of efficiency gives the
account a 5% chance of saving a rune bar if a rune item is smithed with as input three rune
bars or more. This item can be bought from the Rewards Trader (Marmaros) located at
Daemonheim and Wythien of the Meilyr Clan in Prifddinas. It requires 55 smithing and 55
dungeoneering and costs 20k dungeoneering tokens.
Sell-out time: I also sell floors as a keyer, so if you despise dungeoneering or are a skiller,
just PM me.(Sowwy for sellout)
Crystal hammers increase the effect of the SoE by another 5%, so up to 10%. The
requirements of creating a crystal hammers are 80 smithing (you need 99 smith of R2H), and
completion of the quest 'The Eyes of Glouphrie' and 'Plague's End' to access Prifddinas. I
augmented my crystal hammers from the start and used the Rapid Perk and the Tinker
Perk. The hammer should be leveled up to 10 and than disassambled. The siphon of crystal
tools (1m GE price as of the publication of this document) is far too expensive in comparison
to the augmentor and crystal tool seed costs.
Perfect plus potion or perfect juju smithing potion can be used to obtain corrupted ore at a
10% chance each time you smith an item. Corrupted ore give another base 150 smith
experience each
Experience boosting items from clan: Avatar buff (if your clan does not have an ava in world
84, please ditch them and apply for another clan, because the clan you're currently in has to
git gud.)
Experience boosting items from Squeal of Fortune: Blacksmith outfit, Bonus experience,
Pulse cores
Experience boosting items from invention: Hammer-tron, Perk: Wise (use on enhanced
excalibur)
TIP: do not have more than 1 Augmented Crystal Hammer in the bank, if not your bankpreset
will fuck you over multiple times.
3. Smithing
For my method you want to use portable forges and preferably pulses at the cheapest price
possible. What is cheaper than leeching from other people? There is a friendschat (fc) called
"Portables" which keeps track of the portables currently being deployed. If you find yourself
unable to join the fc search for portables fc on google and you will find a spreadsheet. Often
either world 84 and/or 83 have portable forge hosts at the combat academy in Lumbridge. In
world 84 players also often use pulse cores for an additional 10% experience.
Make presets for your inventory and gear as well as your beast of burden. Make sure the
summoning icon left-click option is 'take' and the icon is placed on your ability bar with a
hotkey. Just spam the hotkey while you watch Games of Thrones (any other serie is inferior).
Try to not use any of your portable forges unless it takes more than 20-30 seconds for them to
put down another forge. If and only if (Iff) you do seem to be the one hosting due to other
players not placing forges, search for another world or location using the fc or spreadsheet.
4. Selling
I sold my R2H in F2P world 3 at the GE by doing it the old-school way. They insta-sell for
37k each and alchers alching in leather gear in F2P have 300 mill gold pieces easily, so don't
worry about it. From my experience you should be able to sell R2H for a maximum of 37,3k
relatively fast.
5. Assumptions
Crystal Hammers
Time in
numbers Hours Hours Minutes
Total tool experience required for level 10 40120
Gained tool experience per R2H 19,305
No. R2H needed for level 10 2078 1,73 1 44
Margin of error due to afking (10%) 2286 1,91 1 54
I used SoE, Crystal Hammer, Portable Forges, Blacksmith Armour (Varrock armour 4
banked), Clan Avatar, Perfect plus potion, Pulses, wisdom, tinker and rapid perk for the
results section and at the time of smithing I had 77-84 invention (drain reduction).
To be fair, I think the effective drain rate is even lower than this. However, I never bothered
to exactly produce 1200 R2H and observe the total charge drain, so this is a conservative
approach.
6. Results
Invention experience is based on the amount of R2H's produced and because I made the
assumption of using a static amount of R2H per hour, the estimated invention experience per
hour is also static. The smithing experience is manually put in place by tracking my own
smithing exp. For invention this isn't optimal due to the fact that you get the experience in one
go rather than over time.
Thus, for instance you would have to stop right after the last tool is level 10 and disassembled
if you would track the experience and it should have the same result in the end as long as your
average R2H per hour equals 1200.
Assets
Divine Charges 1.380.875 1.271.409 1.198.432 1.161.944
- Divine Charges (equipment) 60.000 60.000 60.000 60.000
- accum depreciation* (4.407) (8.814) (11.752) (13.221)
Adding the total profit and the assets of 30 July together give us 16.346.785 GP in total over
16 hours and 21 minutes, or almost 1 million per hour.
As said before, R2H prices can go up to 37,3k before the F2P alchers prefer alching other
items and stop buying R2H without hassle. The current break-even price of Rune Bar is
14.353 coins each if you sell your R2H for 37,3k and 14.237 if you keep selling your R2H
for 37k. (probably the break-even price is a few coins higher due to conservative measures in
my evaluation)
7. Reflection
The findings are based on a total of nearly 20k R2H and producing 1200 R2H per hour. The
most important finding is the operating efficiency of 15,44% using the scroll of efficiency,
augmented crystal hammer and the portable forge. A priori I calculated an operating
efficiency of 15,62%. I am not sure whether I calculated this entirely correct due to Jagex
never releasing the precise calculations behind most if not all of the skilling methods, so I
have to guess the order of the calculations and the precise meaning of certain phrases. But I
am not complaining ;).
I actually should have compared this method to other smithing methods, but with an exp rate
of 350k per hour (without bonus xp in the skill) and 880k-1mill profit, we all know what we
should do. So ride the R2H-smithing train before the mining and smithing rework kicks in!
Joking, that rework will never happen.
Lastly, I want to say the only way to make this training method not profitable anymore, is
either by increasing supply prices (which makes PvM more profitable) or by reducing the
high-alch price of R2H. The high alch price of 38,4k caps the price of R2H at around 37,3k.
Keep in mind that alchers can do approx. 1200 alchs per hour and have to buy nature runes.
So the profit per item is roughly 38,400-37,300-400 = 700 and per hour that would be 840k
(to 1.2m if you would sell the R2H for 37k ea).
Everyone has permission to do anything he or she wants with this file, besides ruining my
life in any way!! Thank you for reading.
PostScriptum (PS): Jagex is doing a great job, don't get me wrong. It's just fun to poke them.
