In almost every public-school setting, every classroom has students with a wide variety of
socio economic status. The article I chose is called Education and Socioeconomic Status on the
official American Psychological Association website. The articles states that Socioeconomic
Status (SES) affects our society and reducing the deep gaps in between classes would be
beneficial to everyone. The next part of the article addresses SES and Educational Issues. Being
from a low SES often correlates with early dropout rates and inadequate education. The article
then lists facts about how SES relates to family resources, the school environment, academic
achievement, and psychological health. Because this is a government website, the end of the
article has a list of ways that the reader can get involved and different links to their other related
pages. I think that this article was intended for not only professionals, but parents and the general
public too. This is because the article is easy to read and is accessible on a government help
page.
This article is very effective in showing evidence that students of low SES are often
neglected and are low literacy environments by listing many facts about different studies that
compare low and high SES areas and then sourcing the study. The overall purpose of this article
is to educate the public on what it means to be of low SES and why this causes students to often
not succeed in their education. The article states A teachers years of experience and quality of
training is correlated with childrens academic achievement. Yet, children in low income schools
are less likely to have well-qualified teachers. This article impacts my teaching because
improving school systems, the quality of teaching, and emphasizing literacy to not only students,
but parents and the community as well in low SES areas, can lead to a reduction in these risk
