THE SOLUTION:
BALLAST WATER TREATMENT

10
10
Hyde Marine, Inc. 2013 10
Treatment Solutions
Typically a two stage process:

1. Physical Liquid-Solid Separation

To reduce sediment and remove larger organisms
Hydrocyclone, screen filter, depth/disk filter, flocculation, etc.

2. Disinfection
To kill or inactivate remaining organisms:
Chemical (AOP, electro-chlorination, chlorine, ozone, peracetic
acid, etc.)
Requires additional Basic and Final Approval
according to G9
Physical ( UV, deoxygenation, cavitation, ultrasound, etc.)

11
11
Hyde Marine, Inc. 2013 11
Chemical Disinfection
Types
Chlorination
Electro-chlorination/Electrolysis
AOP (TiO2, hydrogen peroxide, or ozone)
Ozone

Benefits
Effective disinfection/oxidation agent
Certain benefits for high flow systems
Ozone - Relatively easy installation for tanker retrofit (no equipment in pump room)

Disadvantages
Safety & cost of carrying chemicals on board
Creation of explosive hydrogen gas with electrolysis
Does not treat chlorine resistant organisms
Ineffective in low salinity and low temperature water (Electro-chlorination)
Potential ballast tank corrosion
Must neutralize discharge with chemical agents (another chemical to carry)
Ozone - Safety of hazardous ozone in shipboard environment

UV Disinfection
Description
Mercury-vapor lamps encased in quartz sleeves generate light in the
germicidal range of the electromagnetic spectrum
UV light in this region damages nucleic acids in DNA of
microorganisms preventing replication and thereby inactivating the
organisms
No residual disinfectant

Benefits
Kills / inactivates living organisms
Does not create toxic compounds or utilize free radicals
environmentally neutral
Eliminates handling and storage of toxic chemicals
No tank corrosion

Disadvantages
Frequent cleaning of lamp sleeves in the presence of iron and
suspended solids
Electrical consumption in high capacity systems

FILTRATION

17
17
Hyde Marine, Inc. 2013 17
Hyde GUARDIAN Gold BWTS
Filtration
Two screen filters used to optimize effectiveness
Uses Filtrex from HG60G HG700G
Smallest footprint
Non-ferrous material and simple operation
Finest filtration mesh for sediment removal
Uses Hydac from HG1000G HG6000G
Sources inlet pressure for backflush efficiency
Robust, highly engineered filter designed for ballast water
Exceptional volumetric efficiency for high-flow applications

Filtrex ACB Filter
Nickel-Aluminum-Bronze (Ni-Al-Bz)
filter body
Canister-type filter with a central
indexing arm and pleated filter
element
Increases filter surface area
Maintains smallest footprint
Canister is Ni-Al-Bz housing with
316L stainless steel mesh

19
19
Hyde Marine, Inc. 2013 19
Filtrex: Main Advantages

Smallest footprint
Very few parts
less spares
easy to maintain
Quick backwash
ideal for challenging
conditions
No contact between
the rotating shaft and
the filtering element.

Reliance on Inlet, Not Outlet
Pressure
As screen fouls,
Traditional screen filters pressure at filter
use differential pressure outlet lowers creating
between outlet and drain less differential
to drive backwash between outlet and
drain line
reducing backwash
pressure.

Inlet pressure feeds Inlet pressure

through elements to upper increases with
chamber, providing fouling, giving higher
pressure for backwash backwash differential
pressure
