Statement on Organizational Ethics

Maryne Alanis

Ethics are moral principles that influence an individuals comportment or the way an

event is handled. To speak of organizational ethics is to know of the ethics that an organization

has. Organizational ethics clarify an organizations mission, values and principles. The ethics of

an organization are best demonstrated through acts of fairness, compassion, integrity, honor and

responsibility.

I personally feel that I abide by the ethical theory of altruism I always assist others before

me. I am the type of person who treats people the way I want to be treated. I also like to help

and assist others and not myself. I have a big heart and Im willing to do anything for anyone no

matter what. Even if people dont live me or have treated me badly I will still give them a

lending hand and help them. I think that in order to have better relationships with everyone we

must show concern and this will also lead us to healthier relationships. I also believe that I

practice organizational citizenship behavior where I work which increases our relationship with

my co-workers. This leads to good communication and coordination which help us lead and care

for others. Altruism as stated in the book is the following, Altruism is based on the principle

that we should help others regardless of whether or not we profit from doing so.(Johnson, pg.

20) The book also states, The word altruism comes from the Latin root alter, which means

other. (Johnson, pg. 20) This to me says it all because I personally place everyone on an alter

or pedestal and provide them with lots of love, care and assistance without caring for me.
I came to develop my particular style of ethics since I was a young girl. I grew up in an

abusive household so I knew deep down inside how I wanted to be with others and how I wanted

to treat them. The abuse that I endured at the hands of my father rocked my world forever. I

remember being five years old and sitting outside thinking that I wanted to make a difference in

this world. So from then until now all I do is care for others and never hesitate to do so. No

matter whom they are or what they do I will give them a hand and show them that I am there for

them. Knowing that my own father hated me really affected me but I promised that I would

never harm anyone and that I would only show concern for others.

My personal ethics have affected the way I interact with others because obviously we are

all different. A lot of people dont like the way I am because they thein that Im just bootlicking

others. That is not the case. I dont expect anything in return so I know that Im not sucking up

to anyone. It is of my nature to be good to others and to always help them as much as possible.

My ethics will influence my behavior as a leader by respecting others, by serving others,

by being fair or just, by being honest and by building strong communications. I think that I have

to treat others as ends in themselves and never as means to ends. As a leader I would respect

others to allow them to be themselves with creative wants and desires. Respect to me means that

as a leader I would listen closely to opposing points of view. As a leader would also treat

subordinates in ways that confirm their beliefs, attitudes and values. As a leader my ethics

would allow me to show respect and treat everyone as worthy human beings.

My ethics will influence my behavior as a follower because the welfare of my co-workers

and my leader would be foremost in my plans. I would provide altruistic service behavior by

mentoring, empowering behaviors, team buildings and having citizenship behaviors for all
others. I personally feel that even if I am a follower I will influence others to achieve common

goals. As a follower I would work toward goals that are suitable for everyone.

To develop the ethics of the organization itself I would definitely start by recruiting and

hiring with wisdom and integrity. I would inculcate to staff the importance of knowing and

understanding what is at risk if they dont implement their tasks in an ethical and responsible

manner. I would provide them with clear expectations for behavior for all members of an

organization for what is okay and not okay. I would definitely model good behavior to reinforce

the behavior that is wanted and expected from everyone. I would try to provide the tools people

need to act ethically and be able to solve problems. I personally feel that providing staff with

corrective feedback will allow them for more openness and will take feedback without being so

defensive.

Overseeing ethical values in the workplace validates managerial actions. It also

intensifies the correlation and equilibrium of the organization. It creates improvement to trust I

relationships between individuals and groups. It endorses greater stability in standards and

qualities of products. It also refines greater sensitivity to the significance of the enterprises

ethics and substance.
