SAFETY PRESCRIPTIONS WITH REGARD TO USE BATTERIES
Batteries should be charged, maintained and changed only by personnel who have
been trained for this. These instructions and the prescriptions of the battery
manufacturers have to be observed! Near to batteries it is prohibited to smoke and
use open fire. No inflammable materials or sparking equipment (e.g. machine tool)
may be in a distance of min. 2 m of the battery which is charged. Working with tools
with high surface temperature (e.g. soldering iron, hot-air blower etc.) is prohibited.

During battery charging explosive gasses are generated. The

ventilation during the charging process and min. one hour after
end of the charging process has to be warranted.

The room must be ventilated. Before each charging process the

function of a present ventilating system has to be verified. Fire
prophylactics have to be available.

Parts which can be sucked via the ventilators may not be deposited
near the charger. Obstructed ventilation slots result in overheating
and inflammability.

Do not use water to cool overheated chargers, but let them cool
down in switched-off state.

BATTERY INSTALLATION
When installing batteries, always use correctly insulated tools. If batteries are
included with the power-supply unit and require installation in the cabinet, this must
be done in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

Before connecting the batteries to the power-supply unit, remove

the battery fuses. If a fuse-monitoring device is installed, this must
also be removed.

The individual cells or blocks must be joined using the connectors provided. Ensure
that the battery poles are correctly connected. If drawings are provided, always follow
these exactly.

1.1. CONFIGURATION

The commercial configuration tooling (Prophix) calculates the required power and
backup capacity of the total iS3000/ SV8500 system and divides the average power
and back-up capacity by the amount of system stacks. A stack is maximum 4 shelves
on top of each other.
Prophix determines the amount of SPM11 cabinets required for each stack (max 1,
min 0,5). In general, the amount of SPM cabinets is determined by the battery
capacity required. The rectifier capacity of 3x 30 Amps is more than sufficient for 1 to
2 stacks.

SPM11 for iS3000 Systems

Depending on the type of boards in each shelf, Prophix calculates the number of
SPM11 per stack :

the maximum capacity is one SPM11 per stack.

average capacity is one SPM11 per two stacks.

iS3000 : One SPM11 per stack

-5-
iS3000 : One SPM11 per 2 stacks

SPM11 for SV8500 Systems

Depending on the type of boards in each shelf, Prophix calculates the number of
SPM11 per stack.

SV8500 : One SPM11 per stack

-6-
In case of only digital telephone sets in a large (4 stacks) SV8500 system, a max of 3-
4 hours battery back-up time is possible.
If more back-up time is needed then either :

do not use that many digital telephone sets in the shelves.

1.2. CABLING

Battery connection cables are included in SPM11 basic cabinet.

Cables from the iS3000/SV8500 systems to the SPM11 for 48 V DC connection are not
included and should be obtained locally. The advice is to use 16 mm2 cables (up to 15
meters) for max 16 Amps.

The iS3000 has to be connected to DC distribution unit(s) using 16 mm2 cables, M6

and pin tag (0 Volts and -48V DC).
The DC distribution unit has to be connected to the earth with earth cable 1.5 meter.

The SV8500 base unit SN1749 BASEUD-A has to be connected with max 14 mm2
cable.

Cable length and quantity depends on the configuration used.

-7-
1.3. FITTING AND INSTALLING THE CABLES

1. First determine which one (or two) of the 6 load connectors will be used.

2. Remove the selected load connector(s)

by pulling it backwards.

3. In case of the iS3000, mount the 16

mm2 cables.

In case of an SV8500 (base unit

SN1749 BASEUD-A), mount 14 mm2
cables.

4. Re-install the connector.

-8-
5. Lead the cable through the opening on

2.1. GENERAL

The SLIMLINE DISTRIBUTION 4500 is a distribution unit for applications within the
telecommunications area.

The SLIMLINE DISTRIBUTION 4500 - in combination with a SLIMLINE CARRIER -

becomes a SLIMLINE MODULAR SYSTEM.

The functionality of the system is rounded off by the optional inclusion of a SLIMLINE
MCU remote monitoring system which makes possible remote monitoring of the power
supply system via a modem or TCP/IP adapter.

This system features small size and a large permitted temperature range.

2.2. SET-UP

The SLIMLINE DISTRIBUTION 4500 comprises 2 battery outputs, each with a 100A
battery Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB), an exhaustive discharge relay for the
protection of the battery as well as 6 possible load MCB. The load MCB is set to 60A.

The load MCB can be distributed across not more than one NPLD bar.

The control of the exhaustive discharge relay and the load relay is affected via the
SLIMLINE CONTROL which is fitted in the SLIMLINE CARRIER.

The load and battery circuits are connected to the SLIMLINE DISTRIBUTION 4500. All
circuits are fuse protected and monitored individually. A display for indicating the bar
voltage, load current and battery temperature/battery current is incorporated.

The distribution drawer unit contains:

the printed circuit board with the exhaustive discharge relay and the load relay,
the load fuse monitoring, the cable connections to the load and battery fuses as
well as the connectors for the battery and loads.

2.5.1. SYSTEM CONNECTION

Attention!
The power-supply circuits (mains input cable and battery leads) must be
provided with a disconnecting device. The disconnecting devices must be
arranged easily accessible in the proximity of the cabinet system.

Due to the single-pole fused output circuit the system is to be used

exclusively in a TN-net or TT-net, in which the plus pole is grounded.

If an external battery is connected, then the instructions concerning the

installation and maintenance given by the manufacturer of the battery
must be observed.

In order to protect against body contacts, strikes of lightning etc. the SLIMLINE
DISTRIBUTION 4500 must be permanently connected to a SLIMLINE CARRIER.

Battery and loads are connected via the terminals on the rear of the SLIMLINE
DISTRIBUTION.

Attention!
Observe correct polarity! The battery connections must be short circuit
proof!

Provide adequate conductor cross section area to avoid excessive voltage drop on the
battery input line!

2.5.2. COMMISSIONING

Attention!
Commissioning may be carried out only by properly instructed qualified
personnel!

Attention!
Before connecting the AC and DC supplies, check the following points:
Have all components of the SLIMLINE DISTRIBUTION 4500 been
adjusted, mounted and connected according to the specifications?

Is the connected battery a 48 V lead accumulator battery?

- 13 -
3. SLIMLINE CARRIER 4500
3.1. GENERAL

The SLIMLINE CARRIER 4500 and its SLIMLINE RECTIFIER are compact 48 V power
supply systems for applications in the field of telecommunication.

This system features small size and a large permitted temperature range.

The output power of the power supply system can be extended in steps of 1.500W by
connecting up to 3 SLIMLINE RECTIFIERS 1500 for each SLIMLINE CARRIER 4500 and
the parallel connection of several SLIMLINE CARRIERS 4500.
Here, 3 SLIMLINE CARRIERS 4500 are controlled by one SLIMLINE CONTROL.

The functionality of the system is rounded off by the optional inclusion of an MCU
remote monitoring system which makes possible remote monitoring of the power
supply system via a modem or TCP/IP adapter.

3.1.1. DESCRIPTION OF FUNCTION

The power supply system feeds the connected DC loads and at the same time, if
present, the 48 V lead accumulator battery circuits. Up to 3 SLIMLINE RECTIFIERS
1500 for each SLIMLINE CARRIER 4500 and max. 3 SLIMLINE CARRIER 4500 are
connected in parallel within a system.

The connected AC voltage is applied via a mains filter to the SLIMLINE RECTIFIER
1500 inputs. The mains filter is provided chiefly for suppressing interference voltages
produced inside the power supply system, which would otherwise be transmitted out
into the connected mains system. Various control loops in the SLIMLINE RECTIFIER
1500 keep the output voltage constant and ensure that the current drain from the
mains is sinusoidal.

The SLIMLINE CONTROL controls the SLIMLINE RECTIFIER and the optionally
connected distribution. The SLIMLINE CONTROL organises the data traffic between the
SLIMLINE RECTIFIER and the optionally insertable MCU. The potential-free error
messages "Urgent Fault" and "Non-urgent fault" are issued by the SLIMLINE CONTROL
with a time delay.

The operating state "Ready for operation" or "Fault" of the SLIMLINE RECTIFIERS
1500 is signalled by two LEDs on the front panel.

If the minimum load is not at least 5% of the rated load, a fault is indicated.

In the absence of external intervention the system is normally in the "float charging"
operation mode.
The value of the float charge voltage is adjusted according to the actual temperature
(-4 mV/C/cell) when a battery temperature sensor is connected.

- 14 -
3.2. THE COMPONENTS

The layout of the individual components of the power supply system is fixed because
of the compact modular design. Depending on requirements different configurations
are possible. The individual components are :

1 SLIMLINE CARRIER (with integrated mains filter) which can be equipped with :
1, 2 or 3 SLIMLINE RECTIFIER 1500 ( HOT-PLUG ).

- 18 -
Before plugging the individual components into the SLIMLINE CARRIER and installing
the latter in the 19" racking system cabinet, attention must be paid to the following
points:

Attention!
The entire power supply system must be disconnected from the supply
voltages. Neither the mains (AC) nor the batteries (DC) may be connected
and must be disconnected if they were connected.

Plug the components of the power supply system successively into the corresponding
locations in the SLIMLINE CARRIER.

All electrical connections are established when the components are firmly pushed into
the SLIMLINE CARRIER. The completely equipped SLIMLINE CARRIER must be
inserted firmly into the 19" racking system cabinet and fixed with screws.

Attention!
The front plate must be bolted on after equipping the SLIMLINE CARRIER
4500 with the SLIMLINE RECTIFIER 1500 and the SLIMLINE CONTROL.

Attention!
The power-supply circuits (mains input cable, battery leads) must be
provided with a disconnecting device. The disconnecting devices must be
readily accessible in the vicinity of the racking system.
If an external battery is connected, then the instructions concerning the
installation and maintenance given by the manufacturer of the battery
must be observed.

As protection against electric shock and lightning, etc., a potential equalization line
must be connected, if the SLIMLINE CARRIER is not firmly fixed in a reliably earthed
cabinet. This connection must be made on the rear of the SLIMLINE CARRIER at the
earth stud (M6).

For grounding the plus terminal of the supply bus bar the ground stud has to be
connected with the + terminal.

The mains terminals are located on the mains filter at the rear of the SLIMLINE
CARRIER. The mains input cable must be fuse protected in the user supply system.

Battery and loads are connected via the copper bars on the back of the SLIMLINE
CARRIER.

Attention!
Observe correct polarity! The battery connections must be short circuit
proof!

Provide adequate conductor cross section area to avoid excessive voltage drop on the
battery input line!

- 19 -
The terminals for the alarm, measuring and signal lines have a maximum capacity
of 1.5 mm/AWG16.

Attention!
The potential-free contacts have a current carrying capacity
of 0.5 A / 60 V DC.
Only a special type of temperature sensor may be fitted (2k/25C
KTY81-210). This temperature sensor is available ready for use with
various line lengths.

3.4.3. COMMISSIONING

Attention!
Commissioning may be carried out only by properly instructed qualified
personnel!

Attention!
Before connecting the AC and DC supplies, check the following points:
Have all components of the power supply system been adjusted,
mounted and connected according to the specifications?

Is the mains voltage within the tolerance range?

(voltage, frequency) See the Section "Technical data".
