Syllabus:
Introduction to Seismology - Causes of earthquake and their characteristics, Earthquake parameters,
Characterization of ground motion, Earthquake Intensity & Magnitude, Recording Instruments.
Equation of motion for earthquake excitation, Response Spectra & Design Spectra for elastic systems,
Earthquake response of Inelastic system, Lateral load evaluation by modal superposition analysis as per
IS:1893 and codal provisions, Modal analysis of building systems, Classical Damping.
Lateral analysis of the building systems, Lateral load distribution, Torsionally coupled and un-coupled
systems
Earthquake resistant design philosophy, Analysis and design of lateral load resisting systems - M R Frame,
Shear Wall & Bracing. Ductility, Codal provision and Ductility based design of Beam & Column,
Earthquake resistant features of Masonry structures and codal provisions, Introduction to earthquake
geotechnical aspects, Introduction to Base Isolation System & Damping Devices.
Self Study:
The self study contents will be declared at the commencement of semester. Around 10% of the questions will
be asked from self study contents.
