Lutheran Worship: Hymn Singing and the

Revised Common Lectionary
Lutherans love to sing! Give us an occasion and we will bring our best voices! I know, some of us are a
little more shy than others, but when we get together, our voices blend into beautiful melodies. If you
think we dont like to sing, offer the Doxology as a table blessing and listen to the harmony that pre-
pares you for a meal. It is no surprise, then, that Martin Luther is credited with saying, The one who sings prays
twice!
Hymns in Lutheran worship play a prominent role: a hymn gathers us together and another sends us out; we sing dur-
ing communion, during the distribution, even at the time of the offerings; but the one hymn that focuses our attention
most fully on the scriptures is the Hymn of the Day.
Each of the hymns is carefully chosen for each worship service, so that the theme of the day (dictated by the prayer of
the scriptures), is reinforced. If one listens closely to the words in the prayer of the day and the scriptures, as well as
the sermon, there should be a common thread. To drive home the importance of that common thread, the hymn of
the day asks us to stand and proclaim what we have prayed and heard.
Another part of our worship experience that may not be apparent resides in how Lutherans choose scripture read-
ings for each weekend worship service.
You may not be aware that Lutherans are on a 3-year cycle of readings called the Revised Common Lectionary. It used
to be called the Common Lectionary because it was used by Lutherans, Episcopalians, Catholics, Presbyterians,
Methodists, and other liturgical mainline churches, and was a 2-year cycle. That cycle could not cover all of the read-
ings in all 4 of the Gospels, so a revision was debated. In the 80s, it was revised to a 3-year cycle, to make room for
more readings of the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke). Johns Gospel is added to all 3 years, especially in
the Easter Season.
Each week, the Lutheran church traditionally follows this 3-year cycle. You might ask, Why doesnt the pastor just
choose a scripture? Well, there are a few ways of answering that question.
By using the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), the church allows the scriptures to move us where God wants us
to go, as opposed to us trying to move God. It also provides a structure in which the pastor and congregation
can learn about God together.
Sometimes the pastor, or congregation, does choose a scripture different from the RCL. In the past, we have occa-
sionally used the Narrative Lectionary. Luther advocates that, at least once a year, the church engage in a
teaching on the Small Catechism. In that case, scriptures are chosen that illuminate teaching on the different
parts of the catechism.
On rare occasions, a pastor may choose a scripture for the congregation based upon the needs of the community.
Additionally, there are some Lutheran traditions that may choose not to use the lectionary at all.
Much preparation goes into worship planning. Everyone from the pastor, to the worship and music committee, and
the worship leaders, to the congregation realizes the importance of the words of scripture and words of the hymns.
Peace, Pr Tim

DEACON SUPPORT TEAM

All members should be aware of their deacon and hopefully have met him or her to discuss any concerns
or questions you may have had. Your deacons have a sincere interest in serving your needs and encourage you
to bring your needs to the attention of Pastor, the deacon group or council whichever is appropriate. In turn,
we trust you have an equally sincere interest in getting to know your deacon as a present and future friend and
confidant. We also want to emphasize the importance of speaking with Pastor whenever the need arises. He
wants to know your concerns to help provide a solution or answers to your questions. He remains the best re-
source within our congregation to share wisdom and knowledge. Deacons are not exempt from having a dea-
con of their own. At times we need someone willing to listen and we turn to our deacon. In our bi-monthly
meetings, the nine deacons discuss a variety of topics concerning the spiritual welfare of the congregation.
Most importantly we are available for you when your needs might require someone to talk with other than Pas-
tor Tim. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zions Lutheran Church and we encour-
age you to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises. Please call the church office for any assistance.
