Roosevelt High School Swim and Dive Team

2017 Team Guidelines and Requirements

PRACTICE SCHEDULE:
The first day of swim practice is Monday, August 21st from 7:30am-9:00am at Wedgwood Swim Club. These practices will run
through September 5, 2017 (No Practice on Labor Day). Regular practices will begin on Wednesday, September 6th from 6:45am-
8:05am. Dryland practices will be afterschool days and times TBD. There is no bus available to transport athletes to and from the
pool. The pool is close enough to the school for the girls to walk and be on time for school or they can arrange for rides on their
own. Attendance at practices is a crucial part of eligibility and success on this team. Since practices are in the morning, please
plan all appointments for the afternoons. Communication is crucial. I expect all swimmers to communicate with me (Coach Brenda)
directly if there will be absences or conflicts while on the team. Missing more than five practices without communicating with Coach
Brenda may result in a swimmer being cut from the team.
Diving practices are run by Ed Artis edmainlines@comcast.net

CUTS:
Swimming is a no-cut sport, but due to safety and practice quality considerations, I may have to impose a deadline for turning in
athletic packets Last years no packets were accepted after the second day of practice. I will be dividing swimmers into a Varsity
Team and a Junior Varsity Team. The JV team will have shorter practices in the water and supplement their swimming with
dryland exercises. The teams will be based on time trials that will be held on August 30, at practice (50 Freestyle, 50 Back, 50
Breast, and 50 Fly).

ACADEMIC AND ATTENDANCE ELIGIBILITY:

Because swimming and diving is a fall sport, grades from the last semester of the previous year are the first criterion for eligibility.
You must have a 2.0 GPA to swim. The second criterion is maintenance of current quarter/semester grades. If your grade in any
one class falls to a D or an E, coaches are notified through eligibility checks. For a D, you will be placed on a warning. For an E,
you will be ineligible until the next eligibility check, during which you will be able to practice, but not compete. If the E is
accompanied by poor citizenship, you will not be allowed to practice or compete. Attendance at school on the day of a meet is
essential to your eligibility and you will need to have attendance forms completed and turned into Coach Brenda as you arrive to
every swim meet. If for some reason you have a need to be out of school on the day of a meet, you must check with the Athletic
Director prior to the day of the meet. Exceptions may be granted for extenuating circumstances, but more than likely not allowed.

CONDUCT:
At all times (at the pool as well as on and off campus), you are a representative of the Roosevelt High School Swimming and
Diving Team. You must represent yourself, your school, and your team well. Below are some of the main concerns regarding
conduct:
Poor sportsmanship of any kind (i.e. foul language, inappropriate use of or posting to social media, substance abuse of
any form) will not be tolerated.
You must display proper respect towards the your teammates, other teams, pool staff, meet officials, and the coaching
staff.
Do not approach meet officials with your concerns; that is the coaches responsibility.
Do not argue with the coaches about sets or race assignments.

Good sportsmanship and respect for those around you must be observed. Failure to do so will first result in a verbal warning;
second, a suspension; and third, being cut from the team.
MEETS:
The main reason for swimming on the team is swim meet competition. In order to do so, you must attend practice, maintain
eligibility, demonstrate the proper attitude, and give you best effort. At meets, please sit with Roosevelt-not with friends or
teammates from other schools or swim clubs or your parents. You must check in with the coaches immediately before and after
every race to gain race strategies, feedback, and encouragement. You are also expected to remain at the meet, cheering for your
teammates until the end of the team meeting following the meet-no one leaves the competition early without prior approval from
Coach Brenda.
Bus transportation will be provided for any swim meet that is not at Evans Pool (championship season meets are subject to
change). All swimmers/divers are required to ride the bus as a team to and from the meets.

LETTERING CRITERIA:
1. An athlete must maintain academic eligibility and citizenship criteria for the entire season.
2. An athlete must complete the entire regular season, including 4 out of the 6 dual meets.*
3. An athlete must complete 42 out of 48 practices regardless of illness, injury, or other circumstances. Note: arriving late or
leaving early will count as a missed practice as well as sitting out at practice.*
4. An athlete must swim a Metro Time Standard at any swim meet.

*Swimmers seeking a P.E. waiver will be required to complete these two requirements to receive the waiver. No
Exceptions!

UNIFORMS:
By league regulation, swimmers must wear a one-piece swimsuit (no ties) that fits your body appropriately. Roosevelt swimsuits
will be available for purchase the first two weeks of practice. Team swim caps will be available for competitions. Other team gear
will be available for purchase as well.

FUNDRAISING:
We will have a Swim-A-Thon as a team fundraiser this year. Participation will be required from each swimmer. This event will take
place on August 31 during practice. More information to be provided.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:
Volunteers are needed for swim meets to run smoothly and quickly. Each swimmer is required to supply 1-2 volunteers each swim
meet. Please ask parents, family members, and/or friends to help. There are many students at RHS who are in need of community
service hours for various organizations. Also, encourage the Mens Swim Team to come out and support our team.

PICTURE DAY:
Rowland Studio will be at the pool bright and early to take the team picture for the yearbook. Team picture orders will be available
if there is an interest. Team picture day:TBD
