Task 6 living abroad

Is not an easy decision to migrate to another country, specially a countries which are so different
culturally and idiosyncratically. The decision to go on living away requires to think in many aspects,
such as what am I going to do in the new country?, which are my possibilities of getting a job?,
How long it will take me to learn the language?, Is my family to settle in this new life?, and so on.

Many years ago, I went to live to Australia and on that time, I didnt even consider these aspects,
which I had faced when I was living already there. Even though, I was lucky because my mother
was living in Australia for almost 15 years at that time, she helped me to settle down very quickly.

On that time, I just finished the university in Chile, and I was coming from a very high standard of
life. For me it was shocking to arrive to Australia and realized that I didnt speak English at the
level that it is required to live and work in Australia. The Australian migration agency send me to
learn English in an special programme for migrant and also to a counsellor who told me that the
only expectation he saw for me was to get a job in the lower levels of work in that country.

When I got out of that meeting, I decided to study English and get a job as a teacher as soon as
possible. He was right in one thing, I got a job in a factory, because on that job at first I didnt have
to speak very good English, but also I got that job due to I finished work at 3:00pm and then I ran
to the migration English course . After two months I finished the English course and then I applied
to the New South Wales University advanced English course, which I completed in six months.
After that I applied to the New South Wales Education Board and I got a job as a Spanish and
History teacher. So I was quite proud of myself, because I got the job and before a year I was
working as a teacher.

On the other hand, during my experience of living in Australia I saw many migrants which after so
many years they didnt learn English and finally they were agreed to the level of living which the
society assigned to them.
