Annotated Bibliography

Bohlin, Raymond G. Human Genetic Engineering. Probe Ministries, Probe Ministries, 19

Nov. 2014, www.probe.org/human-genetic-engineering/.

While the article is published by a church which can create bias, the article provides

factual information and remained generally neutral throughout. The article was about the

different ways of genetic engineering. It focused mainly on gene therapy which occurs

after birth. I plan to use this article to discuss options within genetics and medicine after

birth.

Choi is a reputable author for many popular science magazines and reviews. He has done

a review for MIT as well. The article was about how human embryos can be cloned even

though no human embryo has been successfully cloned. Not all of the states in the U.S.

have banned human reproductive cloning. I plan to use this source to outline a future

option involving genetics and medicine.

Dresser, Rebecca. "Genetic Modification Of Preimplantation Embryos: Toward Adequate

Human Research Policies." Milbank Quarterly 82.1 (2004): 195-214. Business Source

Complete. Web. 4 Jan. 2017.

Rebecca Dresser is a professor at Washington University and is an expert in biomedical

ethics. Her article covers the lack of policies protecting those vulnerable to genetic

modification. The article also reviews the few policies available and what they cover.

One other thing the article goes over is the types of genetic modification. I plan to use

this source to describe the policies that are in place, or not in place, in regards to genetic

modification.

Garreau, Joel. "Perfecting The Human." Fortune 151.11 (2005): 101-108. Business Source

Complete. Web. 21 Dec. 2016.

Joe Garreau is known for covering topics about cultural evolution well and with validity.

This article talks about some of the new technologies that advance humans that are

readily becoming available. I plan to use this article to talk about general new

technologies (GRIN) and DARPA.

Le Page, Michael. "Crossing The Germ Line." New Scientist 225.3008 (2015): 1. Science

Reference Center. Web. 11 Jan. 2017.

Le Page is a features editor at New Scientist and has a doctorate in immunology. Thus, he

knows, understands, and has access to reliable and relevant information. This article is

about some of the misconceptions revolving around genetic engineering. Genetic

engineering has been going on for years through nature and people now have the chance

to help cure diseases through it. I plan to use this source to address why some people are

against genetic engineering and how some of their reasoning may be false.

Le Page, Michael. "Fine-Tuning The Genome." New Scientist 230.3078 (2016): 32. Science

Reference Center. Web. 9 Jan. 2017.

The author is a reporter for the New Scientist magazine which is generally considered

accurate and credible. The article covers epigenome editing which does not alter the

genes themselves, but instead alters the chemicals that tell the genes what to do.

Epigenome editing may allow people to turn one type of cell into another or cure diseases

by turning a gene on or off. I plan to use this source to offer another option that is related

to genetic modification but does not alter the genes directly.

Lehmann-Haupt, Rachel. Designing the $100,000 baby. Assisted Reproduction, MSN Money.

Center for Genetics and Society, 23 Sep. 2008.

http://www.geneticsandsociety.org/article.php?id=4303. Accessed 4 Jan. 2017.

The author is considered an expert in future technology on fertility and the publisher is a

valid source for alerting the public of new technology in reproductive areas. The article

talks about the cost of scanning a cell from a fertilized embryo for abnormalities as well

as the cost for egg donation. I plan to use this source to highlights the costs of both

techniques in my essay.

Regalado, Antonio. "Engineering The Perfect Baby. (Cover Story)." MIT Technology Review

118.3 (2015): 26. MasterFILE Complete. Web. 4 Jan. 2017.

Antonio Regalado is the senior editor for biomedicine for MIT technology review. He

remains neutral and covers multiple perspectives throughout the article. The article

covered information regarding how germ-line engineering works, where it is at currently,

and peoples views on it. I plan to use this source to describe the process of germ-line

engineering.

Sherbahn, Richard. What is in vitro fertilization - IVF?. In Vitro Fertilization, IVF - the

Process and Procedures, Advanced Fertility Center of Chicago, 2016.

http://www.advancedfertility.com/ivf.htm. Accessed 5 Jan. 2017.

The author has knowledge of the topic and is reliable because he is a fertility specialist

doctor. This source is about what IVF (in vitro fertilization) is and how it works. I plan to

use this source when describing IVF.

What is genetic engineering?. Yourgenome, 19 Dec. 2016. Accessed 5 Jan. 2017.

http://www.yourgenome.org/facts/what-is-genetic-engineering.

The yourgenome website is produced by a university in the UK that has designers and

writers that studied different aspects of science at a variety of colleges. Thus, the website

information is credible because it comes from experiments. The website lists information

describing what genetic engineering is, how it works, the process, and what else it is used

for. I plan to use this source to describe and define genetic engineering.
