GENERAL:
Hexagon head cap screws that are presented in this standard have been coordinated, to the extent
possible, between ANSI B18.2.3.1M-79 and, ISO 4014-79 and 4017. There exist a few relatively
minor dimensional differences between the ANSI and ISO documents, but none that will affect the
functional interchangeability of screws manufactured to these requirements.
FILLET:
The fillet shall be a smooth and continuous curve fairing smoothly into the under head bearing
surface at a diameter no larger than Da maximum specified. No radius in the fillet contour shall be
less than the R minimum specified.

THREAD LENGTH, B:
The length of the thread shall be controlled by the grip gaging length Lg and the body length Ls,
as set forth in the following:
Grip Gaging Length Lg is the maximum length, measured parallel to the screw axis, from the
under head bearing surface to the face of a non-counterbored or non-countersunk standard
GO thread ring gage assembled by hand as far as the thread will permit. It represents the
minimum design grip length of the screw, and shall be used as the criterion for inspection and
for determining thread availability when selecting screw sizes, even though usable threads may
extend beyond this point. Maximum grip gaging length values, as calculated and rounded to
one decimal place, shall be determined from the formula: Lg = L - B.
Body length Ls is the minimum length, measured parallel to the screw axis, from the under
head bearing surface to the last scratch of thread or to the top of the extrusion angle,
whichever is closest to the head. It also shall be used as a criterion for inspection. Minimum
body length values, as calculated and rounded to one decimal place, shall be determined from
the formula: Ls = Lg as calculated, - X.
NOTE: For screws having nominal lengths which have a calculated Ls value equal to or less
than the Lu dimensions, as specified below, shall be threaded the full length. For these screws
the distance from the under head bearing surface to the face of a non-counterbored on non-
countersunk standard GO thread ring gage assembled by hand as far as the thread will permit
shall not exceed the Lu dimensions, as specified below.

1) These dimensions shall apply when the n ominal length L is equal to or less than 10 times the nominal diameter
or 150 mm, whichever is shorter.
2) These dimensions shall apply when the nominal length L is greater than 10 times the nominal diameter or 150
mm, whichever is shorter.
THREAD LENGTH:
The distance A, from the last full thread to the bearing surface, shall not exceed the values shown In the table
above.
POINT - Z:
The point must be flat and chamfered, or for the M4 size may be as "roll ed" (sheared end). The length shall not
exceed the values as in the dimensional table, which equal two times the thread pitch.
MANUFACTURING REQUIREMENTS:
Screws shall be cold formed with rolled or cut threads in accordance with the manufacturer's practi ces.
Screws shall conform to Decarburization 2/3 H as specified in SAE Recommended Practice J121-May 94.
MATERIAL AND MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Property class 10.9 snail apply to all sizes of screws. The minimum tensile strength and proof load of 1040 and
830 MPa(N/mm2) respectively, with a hardness of Rockwell C31 -39 shall apply. These values are based upon
ISO 8981/1 and SAE Standard J1199-Aug 86 covering Mechanical Properties for Metric Externally Threaded
Steel Fasteners.
THREAD SERIES:
Shall be-the metric coarse thread series conforming to dimensions for general purpose external threads given in
ANSI B1.13 with the class 6g tolerance. (Draft proposal of ISO 965/1)
PROTECTIVE TREATMENT:
Unless otherwise specified, screws shall be furnished plain wi th a wax coating or a rust preventive oil.
When a coating or plating is required, it shall be specified by adding to the part number the appropriate suffix
letter(s), chosen from Section MT of Engineering Design Guidelines.
NOTE: When screws are to be electroplated, the appropriate suffix letter shall be used to indicate that hydrogen
embrittlement relief treatment is required.
Electroplated screws shall be furnished dry and free from oil, grease, or wax.
WORKMANSHIP:
Screws shall be free from burrs, seams, laps, loose scale, and any other defect that might affect their
serviceability.
PART NUMBER FORMULA:
The first one or two digits following the M represent the nominal screw diameter and the last two or three
digits represent the nominal screw length. Example: 10CM12120 is for 12 mm nominal screw diameter and 120
mm nominal screw length, without a protective treatment.
NOTES: 1) Screw with lengths above the heavy stepped line are threaded full length, see 7CM standard.
REFERENCE:
ISO 4017
GENERAL:
Hexagon socket button head cap screws that are presented in this standard are being coordinated,
to the extent possible, between ANSI B18.3.4M-86 and ISO/TC2 7380-1983. There will be
complete interchangeability between the two documents except for a few relatively minor
dimensional differences in the thread fit and the magnitude of the length tolerance.
FILLET:
The form of the fillet shall be optional, provided it be a concave curve fairing into the bearing
surface no greater than the maximum transition fillet diameter B specified in the dimensional table.
LENGTH:
The screw length shall be measured, parallel to the screw axis, from the plane of the bearing
surface under the head to the plane of the flat of the point. The allowable tolerance on screw
lengths up through 16mm shall be plus and minus 0.3, and for the longer lengths it shall be plus
and minus 0.5.
THREAD LENGTH:
For nominal screw lengths equal to or shorter than the standard maximum lengths shown in the
part number table, the complete (full form) threads, measured with a non-counterbored or non-
countersunk standard GO thread ring gage, shall extend to within two threads (pitches) of the
bearing surface under the head, see unthreaded lengths U in the dimensional table.
For nominal screw lengths longer than those shown in the part number table, the length of
complete thread shall, at the option of the manufacturer, be between the minimum limit of twice
the basic screw diameter plus 12 mm and a maximum limit of the unthreaded length U in the
dimensional table.
MATERIAL:
Screws shall be made from alloy steel conforming to the following chemical composition
requirements: 0.31 to 0.48% carbon, 0.045% maximum phosphorus, and 0.045% maximum
sulfur. The screws shall also have one or more of the following alloying elements: chromium,
nickel, molybdenum, or vanadium, in sufficient quantity to ensure that the surface hardness range
of Rockwell C39 to 44 for sizes up through M12 and Rockwell C37-44 for the M16 size is met
when the screws are heat treated, oil quenched, and tempered at a minimum tempering
temperature of 345C.
NOTE: This screw is designed and recommended for applications where a lower head profile,
than that of socket head cap screws (1GM through 5GM), is required to prevent
interference. Wrenchability is significantly reduced due to the smaller sockets and
shallower key engagements and, because of the head configuration, the property class
12.9 (approximately equivalent to ASTM A 574M-84) tensile loads will not be met.
PROTECTIVE TREATMENT:
Unless otherwise specified, screws shall be furnished with an oiled black oxide coating (thermal or
chemical). If another coating or plating is required, it shall be specified by adding to the part
number the appropriate suffix letter(s), see Section SP-2 for plating.
Electroplated screws shall be furnished dry and free from oil or grease.
The table below lists sizes considered normally available by button head cap screw manufacturers.
In special circumstances part numbers may be created for lengths not shown by using the part
number formula. These are considered specials (not preferred) by the manufacturer.

For these screws
the distance from the under head bearing surface to the face of a non-counterbored or non-
countersunk standard GO thread ring gage assembled by hand as far as the thread will permit,
shall not exceed the Lu dimensions, as specified below.
