Activity The learning activity will get students to compare and contrast the arts, literature
and philosophical creativity of the Italian Renaissance with the Middle
Ages/Medieval period. Students will demonstrate knowledge by citing
differences and similarities in the artistic, literary, and philosophical creativity.
Students will identify and contrast prominent Italian Renaissance artists and
writers with Medieval artists and writers.
The class will begin by having the teacher go over the characteristics of the
Italian Renaissance and the Middle Ages/Medieval periods (following the SOL
guidelines). Teacher will go over the prominent Italian Renaissance and Medieval
artists and writers. Teacher will ask students to use this website:
http://creately.com to create a compare and contrast diagram template. Students
will cite the differences and similarities between the two periods on the template.
The template will help students organize their information and visualize the
differences and similarities of the two periods.
In the compare and contrast diagram/template the students will include:
labels (Renaissance and Medieval/Middle Ages)
answers to the following 4 questions:

1. How did the arts and literature of the Renaissance differ from those of the
Medieval/Middle Ages? (Cite at least 6 differences on each side, 12 total)
2. How were the arts and literature of the Italian Renaissance similar to the
Medieval/Middle Ages arts and literature (Cite at least 2)
3. Who were the prominent Italian Renaissance artists and writers? (Cite at
least 3 examples)
4. Who were the prominent artists and writers from the Medieval/Middle
Ages? (Cite at least 3 examples)
Pedagogy
 Technology The technology that will be used in this lesson is a website
called http://creately.com
This website allows students to create a compare and contrast diagram template
for free.
Directions 1. First open the internet
for Use 2. Then type in the URL: http://creately.com
3. When you get on the website click where it says Sign in(located top
right corner)
4. Sign in with email: aabok002@odu.edu
and password: History#1
5. Click on the yellow button that says Go to Creately App and a yellow
light will appear
6. Wait at least 30 seconds for the My Home Project page to appear.
7. Click on the blue button Open Document located on the left corner of
the screen to open the document
8. When the document is open, review the example provided
9. When you are done reviewing the provided example, click on the first
icon (yellow file) located top left, this will take you back to the My
Home Project page
10. Click on a second icon (yellow file) titled New Project located on the
right, under My Home Project (yellow file)
11. Click on the green circle with a green cross button to create a diagram
12. Type in: compare and contrast diagram, to answer the question What do
you plan to draw?
13. Click on the template on the right
14. Choose a template (of your liking) by clicking on it , then click on the
Use button located on the right
15. Name your diagram (use your first name only)
16. Then click on the green Create Document button
17. From here you can create your own Compare and Contrast template
18. Include in your template the 2 opposing time periods (Renaissance versus
Medieval/Middle Ages) and the required citations to answer the four
questions posed
19. For help on how to use the template click Help located on the right (its
written sideways)
20. When the Help margin is open click where it says Open Creately Help
to open the Help Center page
21. Enlarge the Help Center page, scroll up and down to select which areas
you need help in. Click on your selection.
22. When done with the Help Center page, minimize the page and return to
your Compare and Contrast template
23. Complete your Compare and Contrast template
Technology

24. Save your template by clicking the Save icon located top left. A pop up
will appear, click the save button located on the bottom left. You are
now done.
