ResearchersatRMITUniversityhavecreatedwhattheycallliquidmetalmarblesdropletsofliquidmetal
coatedinnanoparticlesinaworldfirstbreakthroughthatadvancesresearchintosoftelectronicsandindustrial
sensingtechnologies.

TheteamfromRMITsPlatformTechnologiesResearchInstituteisthefirsttocombinetheconceptsofliquid
marbleswithliquidmetaldroplets,creatinganovelplatformbyusingfunctionalnanoparticlesasasemisolid
coatingonliquidmetals.

LeadinvestigatorDrVijaySivansaidtheliquidmetalmarbles,whichhaveahighlyconductivecoreanda
coatingoffunctionalnanoparticleswithhighlycontrolledelectronicproperties,weredevelopedaspartof
investigationsintoflexibleconductivesystemsforelectronicandelectromagneticunits.

Theliquidmetalmarblesourteamhasdevelopedarelikeflexibleballbearingswithextraordinaryphysical
properties,DrSivansaid.

Theycanendurehighimpactswithoutdisintegrating,cantoleratehightemperatures,canoperatelike
semiconductingconductingsystemsthebaseoftransistorsandarecompatiblewithmicroandnanofluidic
systems.

Thepossibilitiesthisnewplatformoffersareamazingandwelookforwardtoexploringthepotentialofliquid
metalmarblesinarangeofapplications.

Theresearchteamdevelopedthenewplatformbycoveringthesurfaceofliquidmetaldropletswithselected
nanocoatings,resultinginmarblesthatwerebothnonstickanddurable.

Thissimpleapproachovercomesthelimitationsofdropletsandliquidmetalsandmeanswecanuseabroad
rangeofpowdercoatingmaterials,frominsulatingtosemiconductingandhighlyconducting,DrSivansaid.

Theideaofbuildingliquidelectronicsbasedonliquidmetalmarblesisunique,astheycannotonlymoveand
formmakeshiftelectronicdevices,theycanalsoproducestrongplasmonicfieldsaroundthem.

Forsensingapplications,thesemarblesarethesafestalternativetomercurybasedheavymetalionsensors,
whiletheirthermalconductionpropertiesarealsofascinating,andshouldbefurtherinvestigated.

Theresearchwillbepublishedinthe14JanuaryeditionofAdvancedFunctionalMaterialsjournal.
