After six years of tirelessly working on her thesis, singer and actress Soo
Wincci (pic) has now received her PhD in business administration from Open
University Malaysia (OUM).
Soo, 31, was also recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the first
Miss World Malaysia to receive a doctorate.

The former beauty queen said that she could not hold back her tears when her
lecturer, who supervised her thesis, informed her that she had passed and
was eligible to receive the title of Doctor of Philosophy.

I could not control my emotions the moment I was told by my thesis

supervisor that I had passed.

For the first time in my life I cried non-stop for an hour from the memory of the
six year journey to achieve my ambition of holding a doctorate, she
told mStar Online.

Her convocation ceremony was held Monday at the Putra World Trade
Centre.

Soo also holds a law degree from the University of Reading, UK, as well as a
masters degree in business administration from the University of the
Sunshine Coast, Australia.

She said that she was overcome with sadness when recalling the sacrifices
she had made over the six years it took her to complete her thesis.

During the entire period, I had to give up a lot, including time for myself, my
family and friends, even love, in order to realise this dream.

I didnt get enough sleep up to the point that I barely recognised myself but
now I can rest to my hearts content, she said.

Soo shared her difficulty in completing her thesis on her Facebook page, with
her thesis being rejected numerous times and still not giving up.

I dont remember how many times my thesis was rejected by the lecturer and
corrections needed to be made, up to the point that I was scolded by those
around me who asked me to stop forcing myself to study.

However, I had to work hard to realise my dream and my vision, she

explained.
She added that her achievement in attaining the doctorate was a new
beginning for her as well as a way to inspire more people to achieve their
dreams.
10 Things We Can Learn from Dr Soo Wincci

Soo Wincci was crowned Miss World Malaysian in 2008. She is an award winning actress,
singer, chef, model, beauty queen and entrepreneur. On 31st October 2016 Soo Wincci was
awarded the doctorate title upon completing her PhD and is now known as Dr Soo Wincci. These
are what we can learn from Dr. Soo Wincci.

1) Never give up on your dreams.

Giving up is never in Wincci's dictionary. While she works hard expanding her career in the
entertainment industry, she did not give up on her dream of achieving Ph.D. It took her 6 years to
finally obtain her doctorate title.

2) Do not stereotype people.

Being crowned Miss World Malaysia in 2008, Dr Soo Wincci was often stereotyped as a beauty
queen without brains. She proved everyone wrong and further proved that beauty is nothing
without brains.
3) Do not complain. Embrace it, and you will be successful.
It is so easy for us to criticize and complain when problem arises. Dr Soo Wincci tells us that, by
facing our problems head on like she did, we are prone to finding ways to conquer it and not
dwell on it.

4) What a son can do, a daughter can do too.

It is the 21st century, and the idea that someones daughter wouldnt have the same opportunity
as someones son, well, that is unacceptable and not valid anymore. Dr Soo Wincci's success
proved that what a son can do, a daughter can do too.
5) There's no shortcut. Stop making excuses and work hard.
Dr Soo Wincci believes nothing worth having, comes easy. To achieve, is to work hard. Wincci's
achievements today did not just drop from the sky but are resulted from her hard work and many
sleepless nights.

6) Step out of your comfort zone and enjoy taking challenges.

We all have a comfort zone but Wincci believes one should be willing to stretch yourself by
stepping out of your comfort zone. Only this way, you can become a better you over time. Wincci
did not just stick to her forte but over time, she picked up different skill sets such as "Bian Lian",
pole dance, cooking, and many more. Today, she is arguably one of the celebrities, in not just
Malaysia but in Asia, with most diverse skill sets.
7) Stop Worrying About What Other People Think Of You.
"Crazy" is the word many people use to describe Wincci. But she did not mind people calling her
that. Simply because she knows what she is doing. Dont dwell on your short comings, focus on
your strength, be what you want to be and it would shine through.

8) Be independent.
Learn not to rely on anyone too much. Wincci's journey to become who she is today wasn't all
smooth sailing. She has encountered failures and been through many tough times. Despite
countless obstacles that she faced, Wincci remained strong and independent.
9) Be thankful and grateful.
Even if youre successful, remember your friends and family who helped you and supported you
all the way. If you personally know Wincci, you would know that she is not only humble, she is
also a grateful person. She never forgets her family, friends and Beyond Artiste team who have
contributed to her success.

10) Proud to be Malaysian.

Dr Soo Wincci is very proud to be Malaysian as she shows it, being Malaysian is about being
passionate, being responsible and wearing your feelings about it on your sleeves. She never fails
to tell everyone she is a proud Malaysian wherever she goes.
