SURFACE LIVE LOAD

Live-load effect is based on AASHTO HS-20 truck loads. The values of the live load pressure Pp
are given in psi and include an impact factor F' = 1.5 to account for bumps and irregularities in
the traver surface.

Calculation Procedure
Note: Live-load depends on the depth of cover of the vessel and becomes negligible for HS-20
loads whenthe earth cover exceeeds 8ft (2.4m).
By Interpolation:
C = 6.560 ft
Pp = 186.45 psf (8.92) kPa surface live load pressure

= 1.29 psi

For live-loads other than AASHTO truck, the pressure Ppapplied to the buried vessel by a
concentrated surface Pswithout impact can be calculated using Boussinesq' equation:

where: Pp = pressure transmitted to the vessel

Ps = concentrated load at the surface, above vessel

C = depth of soil cover above vessel

d = offset distance from vessel to line of application of surface load
The pressure Pp must be increase for the funtuatin nature of surface line loads by multiplying
by the impact factor F' given in the Table 2.

OVALITY and STRESS
OVALITY
A buried vessel tends to ovalize under the effect of earth and live load, as illustrasted in the
Figure 3. The modified lowa deflection formula may be used to calculate the ovality under
earth and live load

Figure 3. Ovality of vessel Cross section

y =

where: y = 0.110 in (2.8) mm vertical deflection of vessel

y /D = 0.093% ovality of vessel

Di = 1.5 deflection lag factor (~1.0 - 1.5)

K = 0.1 bedding constant (~0.1)

P = 6.69 lb/in (46.1) kN/m pressure on vessel due to soil load Pv plus live load Pp
R = 59.69 in (1516) mm vessel radius, in
E' = 200*FS psi modulus of soil reaction (see Table. 2) multiplied
= 100.0 psi (689) kPa by a safety factor of 0.5, psi

(EI)eq = EI + ELIL + ECIC equivalent vessel wall stiffness of the

bare vessel, lining (subscript L) and
(EI)eq = 6.34E+05 lb-in (71.68) kN-m coating (subscript C).
3
I = t / 12
3
= 2.08E-02 in (341) mm^3
Allow. Ovality of vessel = 5% D
The vessel design for 6.56ft (2.0m) of cover is satisfactory for the defined conditions.

THROUGH-WALL BENDING
Under the effect of earth and surface loads, the through-wall bending stress in the buried
vessel, distributed as shon in the Figure 4.

Figure 4. Through-Wall Bending Stress

through-wall bending stress

where: y/D = 0.0009 vessel ovality

t/D = 0.0053
E = 30459442 psi modulus of elasticity of vessel

bw = 594.7446 psi (4.1) MPa

Allow. Bending = 0.6* y

y = 35971.2 psi (248) MPa Yield stress of steel

= 21582.69 psi (149) MPa Allowable bending stress

Capacity of section is safe against through-wall bending from earth load.
RING BUCKLING
If the soil and surface load are excessive, the vessel cross section could buckle as shown in
Figure 5.

Figure 5. Ring Buckling of vessel Cross Section

qa =

where: qa = 5.028 psi (34.7) kPa buckling pressure

FS = 2.5 for (C/D) 2

= 3.0 for (C/D) < 2
Use FS = 3.00 factor of safety

B' =
empirical coefficient of elastic support
B' = 0.201
The sum of the external loads should be less than or equal to the vessel's allowable buckling
pressure
External Loads = Pv + Pp
= 7.13 psi (49.2) kPa compressive stress
When the qa is not adequate to resist the buckling loads, the soil envelope should first be investigated to
increase the allowable E
