What is Computer ?
Computer Generation
There are totally five computer generations known till date. Each
generation has been discussed in detail along with their time period and
characteristics. Here approximate dates against each generations have
been mentioned which are normally accepted.
First Generations
1924-1954
Vacuum tube based
Using vacuum tubes as basic components for memory and cpu
Tubes electric bulbs heat
Menggunakan Batch Processing sebagai operating system(OS)
Menggunakan punched cards,papertape,magnetic tape
(Input/Output)
Language machines ( 0/1)
- Electric Wire Board
Vacum Tube Technology
Unreliable
Supported machine language
only
Very costly
Generate lot of heat
Slow input / output device
Huge size
Non Portable
Consumed lot of electricity
Some computer of this generation were:
Eniac (electronic numerical intergrator and computer)
Edvac (electronic discrete variable automatic computer)
Second Generation
1952-1964
Using transistor
Reliable of compared to first generations
Smaller size as compared first generation
Consumed less electricity
Faster than first generation
Still very costly
Primary magnetic
cores
Secondary magnetic
tape / diskete
Language assembly
- high level
programming(fotran/cabol)
-Operating System
(batch processing/multi programming)
Support machine and assembly language
IBM 1620
IBM 7094
CDC 1604
CDC 3600
UNIVAC 1102
Third Generation
1964-1972
Intergrated circuits(ics) In place of transistor
Ic Used
More reliable
Smaller size
Generate less heat
Faster
Lesser maintenance
Still costly
Consumed lesser electricity
Support high level language
Some computer of this
generation were :
Ibm-360 series
Honeywell-6000 series
PDP(Personal Data
Processor)
Ibm 370/168
TDC - 316
IC transistor resistor capacitor
Transistor = Mengawal arus sebagai suis
Resistor = Mengurangkan Arus
Capacitor = Menyimpan Arus
OS Remote Processing
-Time Sharing
-Real Time
-Multi Programming
Fourth Generations
1972-1990
Very Large Scale Intergrated(VLSI) circuits
Time Sharing, real time, networks, distributed operating system were
used
Higher level languages like c
1. PC
The personal computer (PC) defines a computer designed for general use
by a single person. While a Mac is a PC, most people relate the term with
systems that run the Windows operating system. PCs were first known as
microcomputers because they were a complete computer but built on a
smaller scale than the huge systems in use by most businesses.
2.Desktop
Also called notebooks, laptops are portable computers that integrate the
display, keyboard, a pointing device or trackball, processor, memory and
hard drive all in a battery-operated package slightly larger than an average
hardcover book.
4.Netbook
6.Workstation
8.Mainframe
10.Wearable Computer
- Motherboard
- Power Supply
- Computer Case
- Keyboard
- Touchpad
Touchpad: A touchpadalso
called a trackpadis a touch-
sensitive pad that lets you control
the pointer by making a drawing
motion with your finger. Touchpads
are common on laptop computers.
