HUSKY ENERGY OIL SPILL IN SASKATCHEWAN
TALKING POINTS
The Government of Canada takes threats to the environment very
seriously. We are working together, with other orders of government
and Indigenous people, to protect Canada’s environment. Our
officials have been providing regulatory oversight to ensure that all
measures are taken to protect the environment.
Canada operates using the Polluter Pays principle. For this pipeline
spill, Husky Energy is required to take action under Canadian laws
and to bear the related cost. | understand that Husky has been
cooperative to date.
| also believe that Husky has initiated engagement with Indigenous
communities and heard their concerns. In Canada, we greatly value
our relationships with these communities and all of those affected by
accidents like this.
In response to this incident, federal and provincial agencies have
been engaged not only to provide oversight but also to offer scientific
advice to ensure response and clean-up measures are safe and
environmentally responsible.
