Subject Science

Grade Level 3

Learning Objective Force, Motion, and Energy

3.2 The student will investigate and understand simple

machines and their uses. Key concepts include
* types of simple machines (lever, screw, pulley, wheel and
axle, inclined plane, and wedge);
* how simple machines function; and
Content

* examples of simple machines found in the school, home,

and work environment.

Activity The learning activity is an interactive whiteboard consisting of

Flashcards, true or false, drag and drop, and short definitions.
The teacher will coach the students first through the
descriptions and examples of each simple machine. After the
simple machines have been established the class can work
together to answer the different types of questions describing
simple machines and their identifiers. The assignment will
work best in a large group with the teacher controlling the flow
of the material or as an individual activity for student review.
After each simple machine is easily recognized, examples of
each machine will be identified as well. Characteristics that
make each machine will be taught. In a group setting, student
volunteers can be called to the board to drag an example of a
simple machine into the correct column. When all machines
have been placed in a column the teacher can check for
accuracy and discuss errors and what distinguishing
characteristics they have that make them the specific simple
machine. Upon completing the lesson students can look for
examples of simple machines in their own classroom
environment that compare and contrast with the lesson.
Students should also be able to construct a simple machine
after learning the material.
